As you walked through my garden of thoughts today I could see your lovely face and hear your smile. I decided to write and say hello before time rushes away with another day.
I remember the day you were kind to dry my tears. You smiled and offered to help. Yes, I know it was long ago and memory fades. Yet sometimes I remember it like yesterday. Especially when I think about how we traveled.
We traveled on the boat of a friend, but you called it a ship. We laughed and decided to compromise, calling it the Friend Ship. It’s hard to really know where our journey began. Was it the tears, or the offer to help? Or was it the laughter of friends? I suppose all we really need to know is we began.
The Friend Ship seemed friendly enough at first. But do you remember that storm that rocked us back and forth? The wind was blowing and the rain was hard, hurting us both. We were sure the ship would break apart and we would drown. Afterwards we realized we had underestimated the life and courage of the friend who was you and I, and had little faith in
the Friend Ship.
Continuing on the journey, friendship became more than just a friendly greeting or kind words to us. It was a relationship traveling as on a ship. As each day the sun would rest behind the moon and stars would dance across the sky, friendship was withstanding the challenges of time, where there will always be storms and obstacles of differing opinions, different interests, and separate personalities.
For any that wish to travel the way of friendship the cost of the ticket is to first be a friend. Those ready to listen and comfort, encourage and help, are always invited to be friends who stick closer than a brother, or those who care about friends and ships.
Friendship does not require a perpetual smile, only perpetual care. Perpetual care insures that none will abandon friend or ship. Friendship also does not require any to love only the friend who is you or I, but it does require love and care for you and me.
Now dear friend, the next time you pay the cost of a ticket for friendship by being first a friend, don’t be surprised if you hear the Lord say, “Now boarding The Friend Ship for the journey of a Friend who sticks closer than a brother.”
