She’s already so busy with the kids and everything. But she was compelled to try it. In truth, she was desperate.
But it doesn’t have to take that long, not if she doesn’t get too distracted, not if she focuses better...
But there are so many who need help!
Sue started out doing it for her kids’ sake – to help them. But sometimes she thinks she gets better ‘results’ when she concentrates on trying to help strangers. So many people are going through so much, things much more difficult than she’ll ever deal with – she hopes.
Sue’s still kind of new at this volunteer job. Doing it every day isn’t exactly convenient. But she just gets up extra early each day. Sometimes she gets up late and then she has to kind of rush through it, which isn’t ideal. But she has no intention of skipping or quitting her volunteer work. She just skimps elsewhere instead.
Sometimes she postpones her breakfast till after dropping off her kids at school. But she can’t postpone volunteering; she may not have the time or energy for it later in the day. And she’s committed to it. She needs to do it, every day.
Sue was surprised at how quickly it became routine. Just about anyone can do it, if they try, even kids. Maybe she just had to find the right volunteer work to do, for herself -- and hopefully for her kids when they (and their attention span) grow up more.
She likes that she can do this job anytime and anywhere. And it doesn’t get boring. She tries to take a fresh look at it each day, to find some new insight she hasn’t considered before.
And somehow she actually gets more done now. Starting her day earlier helps, but then she has to go to bed earlier, too. She doesn’t have much time for wallowing in negative thoughts anymore, which is a definite plus. In helping others, she’s also helping herself. She really does benefit from her volunteer work.
But helping others is part of the reason it’s so worthwhile. Sue likes knowing she’s helping to make the world a better place. She’s trying to do her part to offset all the bad and sad things that mar God’s beautiful world.
And Sue still needs help, too. No one’s perfect; everyone needs help with something. So, just like in the beginning, lots of her prayers are for things she herself needs to work on – and for her loved ones, too, of course.
Sue volunteers for God. And it really seems to help.
She prayed for addicts
-- And another celebrity went into rehab.
She prayed for hope in a war torn country
-- And a terrorist had an “accident.”
She prayed for terrorists to help not hurt
-- And a disastrous plot was avoided.
She prayed for a miracle
-- But a miracle didn’t come.
So she prayed for success
-- And her child’s surgery went well.
She prayed for her family
-- And lightening missed their house.
She prayed for a marriage
-- But will they try again?
She prayed for a marriage
-- And they’re actually getting married.
She prayed for a neighbor
-- And met a survivor of that cancer.
She prayed for an artist
-- And he got a full-time job.
She prayed for a friend
-- And jaw-dropping pictures disappeared.
She prayed for purity
-- And they’re advertising weddings instead of nudes.
Did she make these things happen?
-- Of course not
God did
-- And He let her know
Her prayers matter
-- They really seem to help
She prays the Rosary daily
-- “…lead all souls to heaven, especially those who have most need of your mercy.” *
