He will lift you by His love, out of the angry waves,
He’s the Master of the sea, billows His will obey,
He your Savior wants to be, be saved today.
This verse from the song, “Love Lifted Me,” reminds me of a story that was documented long ago. It’s a story about some fishermen disciples and their leader, Jesus. They were about to embark on a journey they would not soon forget. They just finished feeding five thousand people with very little food. It was time to go, so Jesus sent them on a boat trip to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus said he would later meet them on the other side.
“Hey guys, we had a wonderful day feeding five thousand people. Now it’s time to leave. Why don’t you get in that boat over by the dock and sail to the other side of the shore. I’ll meet you over there after I send home this crowd.”
Matthew asked, “Jesus, would you like some help?”
Jesus grinned, “No thanks, I will dismiss them myself. You just go on ahead and I’ll meet up with you later.”
So the disciples went into the boat and started for the other shore. Jesus, after dismissing the crowd, decided to go to a mountaintop to pray. In the meantime, it was getting dark and the wind started to gust. The blustery weather was so intense that the boat the disciples were in was being tossed about like toys in a bathtub. The disciples were a little afraid.
Thomas said, “Where is Jesus when you need him.”
Unbeknownst by the disciples, Jesus was heading straight for them—walking on the water.
Phillip was scared. Peering across the choppy sea, his eyes spotted a moving object. “Look, as he was pointing, “what’s out there on the water? I can’t make it out, but it’s moving this way.”
Matthew saw it too. “It can’t be a fish. They don’t walk on water. Maybe it’s one of those sea creatures that eat people.”
Andrew and Simon stared wide-eyed and said with trembling voices, “It’s, it’s, it’s a GHOOOST!”
All the disciples were in a panic. They huddled together out of obvious fright. As Jesus walked closer he could tell that his disciples were afraid.
Jesus called out to his disciples, “Don’t be afraid. It is I, Jesus.”
Seeing that it was indeed Jesus, the disciples relaxed. While Jesus was walking on the water towards them, still several feet away, Peter got this bright idea.
Peter said excitedly, “Jesus, if that is you, ask me to come to you on the water.”
Jesus said, “Come then.”
Fixing his eyes on Jesus, Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water towards Jesus.
Peter thought to himself, “Wow, this is cool. If mother could see me now…”
All of a sudden the wind picked up and almost blew Peter over. Peter was afraid, and taking his eyes off Jesus, began to sink.
Peter, in a panic, reached out his hand towards Jesus, “Lord, save me!!”
Jesus saw that Peter was in distress. He stretched out his hand to Peter, “Here, grab my hand. After Peter was safe, Jesus chided him, “Why did you take your eyes off me? Where was your faith? I wouldn’t let you drown.”
Peter sputtering water and shivering, “I’m, I’m, soorrry. I was afraid.”
Jesus saved Peter from drowning. When Jesus and Peter reached the boat, they climbed in. Immediately, the wind calmed and the sea was still. The disciples were amazed and worshiped Jesus.
Jesus is in the saving business; He wants to be our Savior. The word Savior means “to rescue.” Like a lifeguard rescuing a drowning person, Jesus came to save us from drowning in our sins. All we need to do is reach out in faith and ask Christ to come into our lives and rescue us.
