I paused outside the school today, where I had gone when you crossed my path. I was hesitant to come in, because I had heard you had gone on to bigger and better things. It seems a lifetime ago at that place, when my darkness hung over me like a shadow I was constantly trying to fight it. Time has flowed and I am stronger, older and wiser than I was then.
Yet your kindness never left my mind, and has changed how I live.
Most people would never have thought anything was wrong. You had no other reasons to assume except that you could see it in me, I was nine, and scared. I wasn’t able to socialize that well, I didn’t cry or scream, I didn’t fight. I did what was asked of me, and as much as I could to learn – my escape from pain. You were the one who saw the bruises on my legs.
Faced with the view that you had the choice to save me or not.
You could chose to report something that most people would ignore at the best of times – it cant be real, it cant be true. There has to be another explanation.
You had this choice – that I can only barely comprehend as being true now; to face the reality of a child who was wounded and in pain; or ignore it and keep on teaching like it wasn’t going on in front of you.
You chose to save me. You called. I know, I remember that kindness.
Years later I know you saved my life; and I have never forgotten that generosity of love – that you might risk your job to report a suspicion. That you might risk being drowned in the anger and pain of my family to save me.
Life-saver.
I could have died, I saw a report when I was a little older – still just as hurt and not very wise – of a child who had died at the hands of someone who abused them in the same way.
I could have drowned. Lost all sense of any right to hope, or peace. Lots any understanding I was worth more than that.
But you saved me. Rescued me; lifted the rug from underneath them. Called the authorities, and did what you could. Some would call it meddling, some would not consider it something to thank someone for – I do, because I know you saved my life. I know you changed it. I know you took a risk.
I wonder where you are now. I know that you are somewhere in the world, being a missionary. A friend from those days told me that you were a Christian serving there.
I thank you for this gift; that I am more now than what I would have been without you. If I knew where you were I would send this letter to you, I know that God used you so many years ago to change my life; to save my life. That you truly are a Life-saver.
