Twenty five years ago, one hot July day, I received a telephone call. A call no family member ever wants to receive from the hospital. It was the call that informed us that my Aunt who was approximately forty years old and pregnant had gone into labor. They were sure that she would deliver the baby. They could not get the contractions to stop. The problem was she was only five and one half months along in her pregnancy. This meant that there was almost no way that this baby would be able to survive. This was so heart breaking to all of our family. My Uncle and Aunt had one child who was twelve years old, and they had tried for years to have another child without any luck. It was the surprise of the community and family, when she announced that she was pregnant. I believe it shocked her more that anyone else. Our family is very close, so this news was so sad to us all. Before we could get ready to leave for the hospital, there was the dreaded call. Ashley had been delivered. The doctor came out and told my family that she was dead. My father-in-law being a minister was asked if he would officiate at her funeral. He of course agreed. We were all devastated.
The time lapse was about ten minutes and we received another call. We were told that another doctor came through and had begun to work on Ashley. He was fresh out of residency in a large metro area. He told them she was not dead, and he thought that he could save her precious life. He worked feverishly; he did all he could to save her life. He finally had her stabilized, and thought that she would survive the trip by med flight to a larger hospital with all the right equipment. You see she only weighed 1 pound and 7 ounces. She was so tiny that she would fit inside a man’s hand. We were all clinging to the hope that she might survive.
Survive she did. She had to stay approximately four months in the hospital. She is now twenty five years old, and one of the biggest blessings in our church and family. She mails everyone in our church a birthday card each year. She always has a hug for everyone each Sunday. She volunteers her time at the local school helping the teachers, which all adore her. Although we know that God is the one who deserves the credit for her precious life, we also give credit to the wonderful young physician who had just begun practice in our rural town. If it had not been for him being willing to take a chance, we would have had a funeral not the blessing that we greet each Sunday Morning at our church.
