Jared entered the classroom with his head erect and shoulders back.
The other students watched as he politely addressed the teacher.
Derrick snickered from the back row. Bending low, he whispered to the boy in front of him. “Betcha he will be on teacher’s pet list be fore the end of the day.”
Most of the seats were filled so Mrs Thompson assigned Jared the seat next to Derrick.
She quickly went over the first assignment required,. “Write a short paragraph about something you desire, that could be within claimed this year, if allowed to get it.”
Mrs Thompson also told them they would read their paper the next day in front of the class.
“Double credit will be given for just completing the task.”
Then sharing some of the required goals she wanted to attain together with them the first quarter, she smiled and came around in front her desk.
“ I would like for you each to stand and tell me something personal about yourself as I call you name. Something to help us get to know you better”.
“Let’s start with you Rebecca White.”
Rebecca stood and began, “ Well, first I want you to call me Reba, and I like horses. Is that what you mean?”
“That was just great Reba. You know what you want and follow direction well, those are some of the qualities of a good leader.”
“Now a boy, how about you Derrick Robertson?”
He looked at the class, and slithered out of his seat, “ Most people call me Red, and you can know one thing is I don’t like school”.
The class laughed as he sat back down.
“Thank you Derrick, you didn’t mention whether you liked to be called Red or not, Would you prefer that?”
“Well I don’t like Derrick, so yea I guess so.”
“Well I am honored to meet you Red, and at your age I didn’t like school either. In High School I met a teacher who really cared about her students. She changed my life and the direction I was headed, from total destruction to a very abundant life.”
“You may not be aware of it Red but by voicing how you feel about school, in front of every one, took courage. Leadership always takes courage.”
He was so supprised to have her praise him he was subdued the rest of the class period.
“Now let see, Betty Brown?” the teacher addressed a small thin girl, her hear was unkept and she was so shy she blushed even hearing her name.
Standing she never looked up just quietly answered, “ I guess I like school best, cause my Mother always said she was proud of how I did my school work.”
Glancing at her notes Mrs Thomson noticed Betty was from a single parent home.
“Betty that is an excellent reason to do well in school. Honoring your parents is one of the greatest leadership qualities anyone could have.”
“Please feel free to share information with me about your Mother, any time you want.”
“ Now for today we only have time for one more, Jared Johnson.”
“My whole life is about race car driving. That is what I want to become one day, a driver like my Uncle.”
“Tell me Jared, how much time are you allowed to spent around the track?”
“Jared laughed, “ That depends on my grades in school. My family says my education has to come first."
“I see you have a family that care about you a great deal Jared.”
“Yes, they are the greatest.”
“ You show great respect for them and those in authority over you, that also is a character trait of leadership.
Have you noticed that I believe each one you have the potential to become great leaders?
There are many we did not talk to yet but please know that I believe in each one of you.
A teachers job is to care about you enough to challenge you and encourage you to become the leaders you are capable of becoming.
This is going to be a fun and exciting year. Remember, tomorrow be prepared to read your paragraph for us, with the reward of your extra credit as an encouragement to you?
