My flowers beds are my passion.
I have little ones beside the front porch.
Larger ones along the old fence row.
Mediums sized ones full of plants and blooms collected over the years.
I would rather pull weeds than eat.
I would rather prune than do housework.
I would much prefer watering than going to sleep.
Digging a new bed for petunias seems much more interesting than going to work at the hospital, where I work full time.
It has something to do with being in control of my space.
There is something satisfying about bringing order out of chaos.
There is creative beauty in a well kept flower border.
The lovely ever changing blooms are sweet reward for the effort.
Work is priority, but on days off -----
With resignation I put off ‘present enjoyment for future good’, and prepare meals for my retired husband, 3 children, 3 grandchildren, and great nephew who live at my house right now, knowing that the weeds will wait for me, with vigor! Children are at school or work and dear husband is usually busy with farm duties.
With a longing gaze at the overgrown forsythia and bridal wreath bushes, I remove a load of
clean dishes from the dishwasher, put in a load of dirty dishes, tend to the kitchen floor, table top, on and on, through the house till time to prepare another meal.
With a struggle I do shopping and errands, believing there will be another season to dig a petunia bed.

When weary, I sleep, trusting the Kentucky skies to water the yard . Only, sometimes, I sneak out to the yard and play, like the two year old, in the water I spray on the blueberry bushes and strawberry bed.
The clatter and clutter of precious kids playing on my living room floor is daily chaos that pauses for a few hours while they are in school/daycare. But knowing it will improve as they grow to appreciate order lets me live with it. Contributing to their well-being is sweet satisfaction.
Creative beauty of well kept flower borders, may have to wait till I retire. Or even later, as my 89 year old mother said so well about adding new flowers to her yard,
“I’ve decided some the things will just have to wait till heaven.”
Like Mom, I will keep on doing what needs to be done for my loved ones, trusting heaven is a place for creative activities beyond my imagination, and my passion for flowers beds will be fulfilled with lovely ever changing blooms, with weeding, digging, planting and pruning. YESSS!!
