And when one exceptionally talented keyboardist joins together in song with his sibling who is particularly gifted in carrying a tune, the result is an earthly glimpse into the angelic chorus in heaven.
So how is it possible that these two lovely masterpieces of God can also join their voices together in one cacophonic sound? What happens to that sweet, sweet, tuneful sound produced by the perfect combination of notes played on the piano and a voice focused on giving glory to God?
“Oh, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
It is like precious oil dripping upon the head.” Ps 133:1-2a NKJV
Looking for evidence that this majestic oil does in fact exist and is dripping upon our family life can be challenging in a household with teenagers. But what a melody it is to behold when we do encounter those pleasing sounds.
Sometimes… when we listen closely enough to the backseat banter, instead of the sparring and cantankerous discussions, a melody of sweet sounds can be heard. One finishing the other’s sentence. Giggling that turns into carefree, joyful laughter. Determined plans of cooperation. The ever endearing “I’ll-defend-you-till-the-end-against-Mom-and-Dad” routine.
Recently my 9 and 10 year-old nephews visited for a few days. Since they moved away three years ago, we have only seen them occasionally. Quite a bit of physical and emotional growth occurred in that time span, particularly in the lives of my two – now ages 14 and 16. With such a disparity in ages and a gap in between their visits, the possibility of discord certainly existed. True to nature, each set of siblings had their own personal conflicts. Yet when the four cousins connected, it was indeed a melody of four pleasing, sweet tones joining together in rhythm.
Although the phrase, “family melody” can not be located in any concordance of the Bible, truly this universal theme is found throughout its pages. How can we hear more of the melody in family life and less of the discord? Thank you, Lord, that Your Word is rich in answers to this significant question.
Consider these pearls for starters...
“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.” Rom 12:10 NKJV
“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit but in lowliness of mind, let each esteem others better than himself.” Phil 2:3 NKJV
If this godly wisdom was consistently practiced in my household, our family melody would flow like a boundless symphony. How about in your family?
