The occasion was a solo I was performing in front of a captive audience. Of course they were free to leave the auditorium if they had wanted, but there wasn’t really anything else going on at the nursing home at the time. It was supposed to be a congregational singing, but most of the attendees chose to catch up on their nap time. This was not so with one very musically inclined young (eighty to eighty five years old) woman that held residence there.
Not only did she exclaim what a beautiful voice I had, but she also observed how handsome that I was. She appeared to be incredibly intelligent also. Even as she was adjusting her hearing aid and trying to find her magnifying glass, I managed to slip out the door in order to avoid the embarrassment of having to sign autographs.
Upon reaching my car, adjusting the rearview mirror to indeed confirm what the sweet old lady had said, I began to contemplate on just where my musical talents could take me. They wound up just taking me home and back to reality. The one good thing about family (maybe there is more than just one good thing) is that they are brutally honest. The one bad thing about family (actually there may be more than one bad thing) is that they are brutally honest.
Even though I haven’t been back to the big stage in several months, I figured that it was probably best that I didn’t get any more encouragement to pursue my talent of making fine music. I’m afraid that with my singing ability and incredibly good looks (hey, just ask granny), I would just be taken away from my family and my ministry.
Come to think of it, that may be why they weren’t all that receptive to my going on tour idea. Oh well, the nursing home world will never know my gift.
