Our prayers are usually made up of two requests; forgive me, forgive me, forgive me or bless me, bless me, bless me. If you pray often, it’s probably both and if you seldom pray, it’s probably the first. Our prayers are not usually “Dear God, let me see again”.
When Saul was blinded for three days for his acts of violence against the Christians, he secluded himself and did not eat or drink for those three days. He waited while God was working on his heart. Saul was the worst of the worst and yet God began to rebuild and reshape his heart for so that he could be a chosen vessel of the Lord. When his heart was filled with the Holy Spirit, there fell from his eyes something like scales and he received his sight at once. He began to truly “see” what he had done and God changed his life forever.
I, like Saul, never believed I would pray for vision or that God would want to find me. I lived my life as a confident, self-centered, rebellious person; invincible, and able to control anything. Also, like Saul, I had a hardened heart. I wasn’t the worst of the worst, but I was lost. God wanted to gather me under His wings and I struggled again and again to be free. Then the time came when I could not control my own life any longer. I lost my ability to see.
Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, I was numb from my chest down, in pain, and having periods of not being able to see. During this dark period of my life I began to “see” what I hadn’t seen since I was ten years old; that God loves me and will do whatever it takes to save me. At the worst time of my life I realized I had been blind for many years; MS was just God’s way of slowing me down enough to listen to Him.
I began to pray that God would open my eyes to His word. I prayed that He make me see the majesty of His being. And if I couldn’t see in the physical world that he let me see His will and that he lead me; that He be my guide.
At one time my biggest fear was being out of control. Now I know that I was never in control. When I turned my life over to the Lord, I turned over my life, my health, my wealth, and my eyesight. I know that if I lose my vision, God will provide. If I lose my ability to walk, God will provide.
All I needed to do was “see” with my heart.
