“Man works from sun to sun, woman’s work is never done.”
I want to tell you just a little bit about myself. I am a stay at home mom. In other words, I don’t have a job that pays me money for what I do, but someday I will be rewarded for my labors. My hours are very flexible. I never know when I will have to go to work or when I will be finished for the day. Sometimes I may have to work all night. It seems that as soon as my feet hit the floor in the morning my day begins. You see, I am the mother of nineteen children.
Now I know that I don’t have to tell any mother what that means, do I? Do I resent my role in life? NO! Do I get tired? YES! When I get to that point I remember that God says in his precious word “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (KJV)
Let me tell you a little about my life as a mother. Every day I spend one hour in prayer. Now that takes up seven hours out of my week. My usual habit is to spend at least one hour each week with every one of my children. That’s the time I use to show them I love them and instruct them in the Christian life. Now there goes nineteen hours of my week.
Now let’s get to the part about how I train my children. You know you can’t let them go their own way or you will have wild children and they will bring heaviness to your heart.
One of my rules is that they cannot eat between meals and that they have to be in bed by 8:00 p.m. Even if they aren’t tired, I am.
I won’t give them anything that they cry for, and then I give them only those things that they ask for politely. I never allow a sinful act to go unpunished. You know children sometimes cry to get out of punishment. God tells us not to despair for their crying. They’re very cunning when they want to get their own way.
I want you to know that I’m not hard hearted, I commend and reward their good behavior. When one of my children attempts to please me or someone else, even if they don’t do it perfectly, I commend them. Praise goes a long way with a child. I have a rule to never punish a fault that is first confessed and repented of. This helps prevent lying.
I have some other rules that I try to follow, but the really important one is to teach my children to reverence God. I guess you could say that these rules have helped shape the lives of my children. The proof is in the pudding as the old saying goes. Two of my sons became ministers.
In case you haven’t figured out who I am, my name is Suzanne Wesley. The names of my sons are Charles and John.
Although Suzanne lived over two hundred years ago, the same rules for raising children can apply today.
