Miriam was quiet as she came up and stood next to Cleopas and gave him a hug. Samuel was not quiet and he skipped across the room and almost pushed Cleopas over with his hug. Cleopas gave each of them a hug.
“Would you like to hear a story?” Cleopas asked, deciding that would keep them quiet for a few minutes.
“Yes, yes.” Samuel cried out. “The one about the walk it’s my favorite.”
Cleopas smiled and he reflected on that story. It was his favorite as well.
He slowly began to tell the story. Even though they had heard it many times before, they listened as if it were the first time.
“All of my friends and I were sad, our friend, our teacher, the one who we thought would save us from the Romans had just been killed. He had tried to tell us that he would die but we didn’t listen. He had also told us that he would come back to life. We didn’t understand what that meant.
I had been in Jerusalem with my friend, Jonas. It was the afternoon and we were walking home. As we walked, a stranger joined us. Our faces were sad and even our voices sounded sad. The stranger asked us why we were sad. We knew he must not have been in Jerusalem because everyone was talking about what had happened. I asked if he was a visitor because he seemed so out of touch with what had happened.
We then told him all that had happened those last few days in Jerusalem. Our friend, Jesus was a prophet and did good, he healed many people, even raising people from the dead. I had heard him teach and his message was spoken with authority and truth. The religious rulers didn’t like him. This morning some of the women went to the tomb and
didn’t find his body.
Did I tell you about the day I went to hear him and we spent all day on the mountain listening to his teach. We were hot and hungry. Do you know what Jesus did? He fed us. He took five small loaves of bread and two fish and thanked God for the food and then his disciples gave us the food. We ate and we ate until we couldn’t eat anymore.”
Even though Samuel and Miriam had heard these stories before they sat quietly and almost didn’t move as Cleopas told the story.
“Then the stranger began to talk and he told us about Moses, the prophets, and many other truths from the Holy Scriptures. Well, as Jonas and I neared our house here in Emmaus we invited the stranger to stay with us. It was getting late, we had already traveled seven miles. He came in and we sat at the table to eat. He took the bread, gave thanks and as he gave it to us we suddenly realized who that stranger was, he was Jesus, our teacher, our friend. We had walked all that way with a stranger to find the stranger was someone we knew.”
Cleopas paused as he wiped the tears from his eyes. Samuel and Miriam were quiet, too. Cleopas held them tight and whispered, “Jesus may seem like a stranger to you but walk with him, listen to him and you will find that he is your friend.”
