The music played. They stood tall. They stood silent. They knew that standing could indeed bring their end, but stand they must. They were well known, their defiance would surely be noticed, and noticed it was.
It was not long before they were “chaperoned” by guards into the king’s presence. The king was furious, how could these men who he had chosen above all others to work for him, show him so much disrespect?
“Do you understand what is asked of you? I like you boys, so I will give you one more chance to bow at the music. You do, however, understand that if you do not bow, I will throw you into the blazing furnace? There is no god that could save you from that!” the king said with a furrowed brow.
“We do understand the consequences, your majesty, but we will not bow to your golden imagine. If you must throw us in the furnace, so be it. But know that our God, the one true God, IS able to rescue us from the flames. But even if we are not rescued, we will NOT worship your gods or your golden imagine.” one spoke boldly with great authority.
At this the king’s anger grew, he demanded that these three men be bound and thrown in the furnace at once. He commanded that the furnace be turned up seven times hotter than usual. The great flames leaped out of the top. The flames could be seen for miles around, a sure sign to all of the kings consequences.
The guards took the three young men to the furnace to throw them in, and as they did the guards themselves were killed by the flames.
As the king watched, he could not believe his eyes. They were not being burned, in fact, they were walking around and even more unbelievable was that there was another with them. The ropes that had bound them were gone and they were moving about freely. At this, the king commanded them to come out of the furnace.
The three men emerged from the furnace. All who watched crowded around them to see if their clothes and hair had burned, they had not. In fact, they did not even smell like smoke, the only thing that had burned was the ropes that had bound them.
The king gave praise to their God, and commanded that all respect their God. The king then promoted them for standing up for what they believed in.
