I ant had to put up with no youngen for over twenty years. Now you go and saddle me with her.
I’m old and I liked being alone. I don’t want her. Is that clear Joy. I don’t want her.”
“Look Momma, I can’t take her. Ben... well you know how he is. Besides, like you said, your getting old. and ya need somebody about the place to help. Call me if ya need me, I gotta be getting on.”
The next day Gran spoke to the child for the first time.
‘Come here, I want to talk to ya. You will do as you are told to do, is that clear.”
“Yes Great Gran,” sniffled Molly.
“Just because you lost your mother ant no excuse girl, now get out of your mully grubs, grab the hoe and clean out the flower garden.”
“But Gran, I ant never...”
“Shut up! Do as you were told, or I’ll get a hickory after ya.”
“Yes-um.”
Molly, clutching the hoe, rambled to the garden.
Not knowing a weed from a flower, Her six years had not prepared her for the task.
“Well, I guess these tall ones are the flowers, so I’ll just hoe out these small green things.”
Two hours of toil and sweat later, Molly observes Gran step out of the back door, take a long look at the garden and stand speechless, frozen in her tracks, then explode with words Molly never new existed.
She instantly new what they meant, threw down the hoe and started running for her life, with Gran right behind. Molly discovered two things that day, Johnson grass isn’t a flower and old people can still run but they can’t crawl under houses.
“You come out from under there, ya hear me.”
“Yes-um I hear ya,. .But, you gotta put down that hoe handle first.”
“No little youngen is gonna telling me what to do.”
“I thought great grannies were supposed to be kind and forgiven to their great grand kids.”
“Not to runts like you. Now you done made me go and break my hoe handle.”
“Ya shouldn’t of slung it at me.”
‘I would have got ya to if you hadn’t darted behind that pear tree.”
“If I come out you gonna kill me?’
‘I didn’t kill ya momma did I?”
“You mean she did the same thang.”
“Yap... even ran under the house only I was a lot younger than and crawled in after her, so she hi-tailed it out the other side and headed to the woods.”
“Did ya catch her?”
“No, time I got out from under there it was to late”. Her voice softens. “Besides I could never stay mad at her.”
“So, I just went in the house and started frying chicken. A while later she showed back up, a wanting the chicken liver with a fresh hot biscuit.”
“I love livers too Gran. But they ant no woods around that I can see. “
“No child,”. Gran speaks in a mellower tone, “the woods were cleared for houses a long time ago. Come on child I’ll start dinner. You can watch while I fry up the chicken.”
“Yes-um, I’m coming.”
Molly slowly crawled to the edge of the house, peeked out, checking to see if it was safe to come out.
“Baby, you’re just like yo Momma.”
“Great Gran?.”
“Yes baby.”
“You’re a lot like Momma too.”
Molly looks up into Grands eyes, the two regard each other as Grand gently takes her by the hand.
“Come on child lets go cook that chicken.”
“Honey, I thank you and I are going to get alone just fine together.”
“Great Gran, would you’ve sho’nuff hit me with the hoe?”
“Molly sugar, I reckon as long as you behave, ya want have to worry about that answer.”
“You mean I’m welcome... ya want me to stay?”
“The way I looks at it, God knows nobody wants us, that’s why he saw fit to put us together Baby.”
The aroma of frying chicken drifted out of the open window into the neighborhood air. Something
else came through the window that day, something missing for the last twenty years, the joy of laughter.
