That afternoon Julie stared out her office window, not seeing as the rain streamed down the panes. “Great. Just great.” Julia sighed and turned toward her assistant. “When is the baby due? July?” “That’s just great”, thought Julia as she looked into the future and saw only her frazzled self, trying to manage the summer pace of their busy world without her assistant on hand. It was hard to picture and it wasn’t pretty.
Later that day as she was preparing to leave work she picked up the phone to take a last minute call from the head of production. “That’ll be just great, Todd. And what do I tell the client after I tell them we can’t manufacture their product by their deadline?” Just another in a series of frustrating events, Julia brushed her hair away from her brow and pushed it back behind her ear.
Driving home she blew out the air puffing up her cheeks and pushed her lips together tightly, “Out with the bad and in with the good”, she thought. She opened the front door and kicked her heels into the basket by the door. Walking on runny nylons to the den she arrived just in time to see her four year old pull a world wide wrestling move on her seven year old who wasn’t looking at the time. In the midst of the ensuing argument she thought, “What a great way to end a day. Just great.”
Sunday came along and as the alarm went off at 7am, Julia silenced it and went into the shower. Washed her hair and put the conditioner in to set for a few minutes. Swiped at her face with the cloth and took a pass at her legs with the razor. Slipped on some jeans and a ruffled blouse, squeezed into a new pair of boots. Grabbed the kids by the hands and ran to the waiting car where her husband sat neat and handsome behind the wheel.
They walked from the car hand in hand while the boys fought about who could play the video game first when they returned from church. Passed through the door and greeted the greeters with a smile and a polite wave. Picked up the guide and sat down in the back. Listened to the announcements and made a mental note to drop off canned food. Stood when the worship team came out on the stage. And sang.
Then sang her soul. Then sang Julia’s soul. Then sang her soul, her savior God, she sang to him. And she raised her voice with many, with those whose souls also sang, “Then sings my soul, my savior God to thee, how great thou art, how great though art.” How great a God, to bring me safely to and from work, she thought. How great a God, to create a miracle of life within another. How great a God, to provide a livelihood for my family and for others. How great a God to keep my children safe and healthy. How great a God to provide me with a loving husband. How great thou art. She breathed in and realized again, how great thou art. How great thou art.
