Topic: Life (06/15/06)
A few years ago I remember driving by a dilapidated mobile home in a rural neighborhood just outside of Fort Worth. Its occupants didn’t even have the luxury of air conditioning in the ninety degree heat of summer. They did have one unexpected luxury however; it was a large satellite dish.

I thought it strange that some will suffer humid ninety-plus degree heat, and yet at the same time consider the idea of an existence without basic TV as unthinkable. My husband and I found ourselves falling into the same line of thinking not long after that. We had never even had basic cable when we were first married. We were both in college and we managed to scrape by those first few years until we graduated. I look back on those years fondly as we settled in and made our first nest. We were too busy living life for the moment and we weren't worried about not being able to afford cable.

After a while we decided that we could finally afford the luxury of cable and took advantage of a special the local cable company was offering. We had kids by then and they were excited about all of the cartoon channels they could watch. Before they had those cartoon channels to watch, my husband used to make up exciting stories for them just off the top of his head. Whenever we had any spare time, they would beg him for a story. They stopped begging when we got cable and slowly those fun family times disappeared.

More years went by and the prices for all those channels kept going up. We finally had had enough and disconnected our service. We still have a DVD player and we have designated movie nights. I noticed that an interesting thing happened when we disconnected our service. We stopped living vicariously through the television shows we watched and started living a life of our own again. It is interesting to note that every once in a while, our kids still ask their dad for one of his special stories from days gone by.

Isn't it quite interesting how our modern conveniences and luxuries rob us of real "life" instead of actually making it better? Great point here-this could be a really good illustration of how modernization literally steals life instead of enhancing it!
