Emily sat at one end of the table and Dad was at the other. Mom sat in the chair along one of the sides. Mom had that position that required she pass the food around to everyone else. “Mommy, could you pass the corn please,” Emily would ask. “Could you put a few of the fries on my plate dear,” asked Dad. Mom would do her best to get a bite of her meal in between requests. All was right with the world.
“What did you learn in school today Em,” Dad would always ask. He called his little first grader Em since the day she was born.
“Not really a lot Daddy. We did learn about American Indians and some of the things they believed in. Did you know that they would dance and stuff to help feed everyone in the tribe?” Emily asked.
“Yes I did,” her dad answered. “And did you know that they would wonder from place looking for food?”
“Yep, they would follow buffalo,” answered Emily.
“And how was your day today dear? Did you do anything special,” Dad asked Mom.
“Well, I went over some of our financials and some of our investments,” Mom said on this particular evening. “I’m a little concerned that we may not have enough money set aside for our retirement. There should be a little more abundance in the money department if we really do want to send Emily to a good college and provide for our later years.”
“Honey, I’m sure all your concerns are valid,” Dad said. “But there is still time and I’m sure God knows our situation. He’ll provide for our every need.”
“God, that’s your response. God will provide. Do you have any idea how naive that sounds,” Mom asked.
That is when the quarrel would start. It always seemed to be about the abundance of money or the lack of it. Mom believed there was always a shortage of the green stuff and Dad just believed that God would provide. The chasm was just too wide for the bridge to span and the quarrel would escalate. Voices would rise and tempers would soon flare.
This night, Emily simply went to her room completely unnoticed, taking an item from the dinner table with her. She put what she had taken on a paper plate and placed the plate on the floor in the center of her room. She put a CD into her player, turned it on and cranked the volume full blast. The music was so loud that Mom and Dad stopped arguing and ran up the stairs.
They stood at the door of their six year old’s bedroom. She was jumping, twirling and skipping around the plate on the floor. “Sweetheart, what are doing and why do you have a hamburger bun on the floor,” asked her puzzled Mom.
“Well, the Indians use to do a rain dance to help it rain. This way they would have more then enough food to eat. So I’m doing a bun dance so we get more of what we need,” explained Emily.
That night, as they laid in bed, Mom rolled over toward Dad. “Maybe you and Emily are right. Maybe God really does know what we need and will provide whatever it may be just when we need it. May be we don’t need abundance or a bun dance to secure our future.”
Mom did not nod off right away. Her thoughts kept coming back to her daughter’s little dance in the bedroom. The Holy Spirit was there, too. She realized that God has a plan and it took ‘a bun dance’ to show her the way.
