The words from our youngest son Bobby echoed through the half emptied house.
“Well, why don’t we ask aunty June to keep it at her house until we come back during the rainy season, we might really think it’s cold here then,” I shouted back through the empty corridor.
I tried to get my thoughts back to what I was trying to accomplish with these boxes of old memories in front of me.
My emotions were running high, a complete mix of joy, excitement, sadness, confusion, fear of lack, uncertainty and hope were all fighting wildly to take control of my thoughts.
At one moment I would be completely at peace and bursting of excitement of what the future would hold for us and the very next moment would just be the complete opposite.
“This is crazy, absolutely ridiculous, what are we doing?” my mind would scream at me.
“Nobody else is giving all their belongings away that they worked so hard for like this, and definitely nobody is taking their teenage children away from their education and career possibilities and bringing them to a place with NOTHING like you are!” the thoughts of confusion would sneak in and try get a strong grip.
It had been just as mentally and spiritually draining as it had been physically hard work to finish off our house to get it ready for sale, and we were still yet not there.
For months we had been preparing this big step of faith and every muscle, every fibre of our beings knew it. It had not been easy, but with His help we had climbed every hurdle along the way.
Never before had we experience the hold that things really had on our lives.
My thoughts took me back to the very first day after our decision to sell our house.
We still had no idea that we soon would move to another nation, to a new culture, He had only given us the first step, “Sell the house!”
I had been sitting on my bed begging Him to help me to empty my wardrobe of clothes and bed linen that we really didn’t need. It had never been a success before. Usually most things would get put pack into its proper place again and I would end up with a handful of items ready for the garbage.
This day I really desperately needed Him to help me, big time.
His sweet voice told me that He would and by the end of the day I threw five large black plastic bags full of clothes into my car and headed for the garbage dump. With five ‘body bags’ jumping around in the back seat, I had a sensation that I was heading for a funeral. Coming back from the ‘burial’, I had suddenly felt lighter, more free and more at peace. It had been a good day after all and I had an inkling of why He needed to show me these things.
Now, months later, the memory of the’ wardrobe cleanse’ had just been the beginning of a whole string of experiences. The mountains of books had been sorted, the kitchen cupboards emptied and our furniture removed by happy bargain hunting friends.
Even our much loved cats had finally been placed in new homes, the bank accounts closed and important papers filed.
Nothing seemed to have left our hands without a fight.
We had almost lived through a very slow death in many ways, death to our past and the things that obviously had been having a grip on us without us even knowing it.
But through this death a peace had settled, a peace that I never had felt before. Something was slowly forming in my heart; I knew it but couldn’t express it in words.
I wondered what would lie ahead, was there more ‘funerals’ ahead or would we turn a corner soon?
My hope was soaring.
