Emma could faintly hear the doctor’s words but her mind just couldn’t comprehend them.
“There is a strong possibility that your son will not wake up from the coma; it was a nasty fall”
‘Oh God, this just shouldn’t be happening, why are you allowing this!’ Emma couldn’t stop the tears from flowing. It was just too much to bear by herself. She didn’t know how to think or act. It was just so overwhelming. Her mind was becoming too crowded, so many ‘What ifs?’ and ‘Why us?’ thoughts. It was becoming hard to concentrate on the doctors words.
“You must get some sleep too Mrs Smith, we will re-evaluate Nathan’s status in the morning, OK?”
“Yes, OK, thank you Doctor”
Sleep, who could sleep at a time like this! Nathan is in a coma and Rodger is probably dodging bullets in East Timor! Why hasn’t the army rung back, I really need to talk to him! Emma decided that she was going to find a way to speak to Rodger even if it involved becoming a bit hysterical, she was beginning to feel hysterical anyway. There was a feeling of panic rising up from the put of her stomach.
“Beep, Beep”
‘Beep, Beep”
Frantically, Emma rifled through her handbag, ‘That better be Rodger’ she thought.
“Beep, Beep”
Emma finally found her mobile and answered it. It was too late. ‘Blast, that could have been Rodger’
It wasn’t; the message was from Diana.
“Hi Emma, It’s Diana here, I am sorry to hear about Nathan’s accident. Just ringing to see if I can help. I am praying for you all. Just remember to cast your burden on God and His peace will see you through”
‘Peace, the last thing I feel like is peaceful! Oh well, she is a good friend and she is probably right. It just doesn’t feel like my reality right now’. Emma looked at her watch, 1.06a.m.! She must have been sitting there staring at Nathan for hours.
Sleep, sleep, she had better get some. She lay out on the parents’ bed and closed her eyes. She could hear the clock above the T.V. ticking. Finally after a lot of tossing and turning, Emma opened her eyes, sat up, turned on the light and reached for her bible. She flipped it open to Philippians chapter 4. Her eyes scanned down to verse 6.
“Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don’t forget to thank Him for his answers. If you do this you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus” *
She knew what she had to do.
“God, I am sorry that I haven’t trusted you today, I really need you, my heart and mind are in turmoil and I need your peace. God, I trust that you have our lives in your hands and that whatever happens you have only the best plans for our family. Thankyou for reminding me to rely on you. Amen”

“Good morning Mrs Smith, would you like some breakfast?”
Emma opened her eyes as the nurse opened the curtains letting the outside world flood in.
“Yes thanks, How is Nathan doing” Emma asked as her eyes quickly focused on her son.
“Well, still the same I am afraid. The doctors will be doing their rounds soon. The good news is that Army H.Q. has contacted us during the night and your husband has been granted leave and will be touching down about midday.”
‘Oh thank you God!’ Emma felt incredibly different, yes the situation was still serious but the burden was lifted from her mind, the panic had disappeared and in its place was a strong sense of trust and peace in a God who had not abandoned her. Whatever happens, she was not alone.
“Yes, thank you God”
