“The Calling”


The apostle Paul was a man called by God to do the work of the ministry. He had, it seems, no doubt of this as he writes his epistle to the church in Rome. He writes, “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called [to be] an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God…” (KJV) How can he be so certain of such a high calling of God?
Some people spend a lifetime just trying to figure out what the “high calling” of God is, in their own life. They pray without ceasing more for their self, and with far greater ease, than when they pray for someone else. “If I could only discover what God truly expects of me, I would be willing to go to the ends of the earth for Him!” or they may pray, “God, here I am waiting for Your direction for my life. I am willing to make any sacrifice You tell me to do. I will continue to pray for an answer every day. I will promise to take the time out from housework and my duties as a wife and mother if You would show me the ministry that You have for me.”
All too often we cannot bear the sacrifice that we are currently engaged in; unaware that it is God’s calling in our life. Yet, we would be willing to go to extreme lengths to do something other than what the Lord has set before us. The high calling of God is not so often what we think would be precious in His sight; it is more often our willingness to be precious to Him right where He has us.
Ask yourself if God’s calling is what He has called us into, instead of what He will call us out of. The key to understanding the will of God is not in understanding the “calling” as much as understanding Paul’s five words before the word “called.” Look at Paul’s wording once again. “Paul, (a servant of Jesus Christ,) called…” Dear Lord, let us learn to be content in all things.

This is good! Nice, clear, devotional style, with a well-thought-out message. You stated the point very well: "The high calling of God is not so often what we think would be precious in His sight; it is more often our willingness to be precious to Him right where He has us."

Not sure you need to use the word contentment at the end, because there are whole other issues attached to that word. It might be stronger if you made the same point by continuing to center on "calling." (Just a nitpick, though.)
