He wasn’t afraid of them, but rather he was afraid of failing them. When they realized who he was and why he was there, they might not understand. If they didn’t understand then they might not listen, and he might lose them. That realization hurt him to the core. But he couldn’t quit now. He had to go on. Most of them were dying and didn’t know it. It was up to him to tell them and to point the way to the cure.
They deserved to know the truth. What right did he have to say nothing, when he knew their predicament? In reality he was no different then they were. Just a year ago he was in the same situation. If not for someone who loved him enough to tell him the truth, he would still be dying.
This was a life and death mission, and some thought he was too young to be a part of it. They couldn’t have been more wrong. He understood the importance of this mission, and that alone qualified him. This mission didn’t require experience, high rank, or super-human intelligence. It required compassion, desire, and faith. Even as a child he possessed these qualities in abundance.
He would walk among them and he would know them. There was no time limit for this mission, but he still felt a sense of urgency. As he spent time with them and made connections he would look for opportunities. When those opportunities arose he would tell them who he was and why he was there. They were dying and they didn’t know it. No, he didn’t have the cure, but he could show them where to find it. He would point them to source, the cure for all mankind.
Their affliction was sin, and the cure was Jesus. His mission was simple. His purpose was to point them to the cure. His purpose defined him, and he embraced it.
With a smile he stepped out of the car. Before he closed the door on the passenger side, he looked in and smiled at his mother.
“Have a good day at school sweetheart,” she said.
“Thanks Mom. Don’t forget to pray for me.”
“I always do”.
Mark 16:15-16
15 He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." NIV
