I closed my eyes, squeezing back my tears, with words still echoing in my ears, “he didn’t make it, his family is devastated”, as I put down the phone. My thoughts lingered on the young wife and the child he has left behind. I mentally crossed out this item from my prayer journal and added the young mother and child as people who needed coverage in prayer. Mentally I flipped through recent emails and telephone calls each ear marked uniquely under ‘bad news- dead’ in my neural network. At my desire my neural travelator conveyed me through the seamless memory chambers until it stopped at my first recollection of death, dying and my question on the purpose in life?
We were six of us, cousins, two boys and four girls, left in the care of my aunt. We were all working hard to finish our schooling and to enroll in college. All of us nurturing personal dreams and ambitions close to our hearts. I remember days when we would lie flopped on cushions chatting away amicably of our future and about what we would become and who we would marry and how wonderful life would be for us. I’m sure each of us vowed silently never to break this wonderful relationship between us. We were like six petals on a single flower. Time has a strange way of orchestrating things. Before the end of three years all of us moved away each chasing our own careers and dreams. I moved to my father’s house to complete college and quite unexpectedly one of my cousins opened his own business in the same town. My cousin was six years older than me, and at that time he had fallen in love with a wonderful woman, the love of his life. He was busy planning their wedding and dreamt of the fairy tale beginnings of happily ever after, and I of course was the couple’s confidante and friend. My cousin and I spent hours making plans for the wedding and often we thought of how the occasion would augment a reunion of the six.
Time on the other hand has the knack of delivering personalized Pandora boxes to unsuspecting individuals. One such package was sent to my cousin whose life and purpose in life changed within milliseconds. He lay hospitalized with internal and external injuries from a terrible road accident, his life was suddenly placed on a balance held by God himself, the choices before him were very limited and time was receding like broken tide on a shore. Life for him stopped being lateral and took on a vertical cover.
After a month in hospital his world began to shrink. The visitors stopped coming, the days were long and sympathies were called away to other more recent events. The love of his life turned out to be Orpha and not Ruth and the doctors were more pessimistic about him resuming normal life. During this time his vertical glaze became more intent and serious. When his glaze met the loving Saviour the burden of his soul rolled away. His body had deteriorated to such an extent that I could literally count the bones on his rib cage, his features were just hollows but in his eyes, his eyes were different somehow. His eyes blazed with his newfound hope and love. He spent the last few weeks of his life focused on his onward home. As an onlooker and an active participant in the series of events that affected my cousin, I could not continue my life in any way after that. Life can paint some sudden adversities on the dynamic canvas of our lives; our reactions to these portraits determine our purpose in life.
I purposed that day to live my life in view of eternity. Since that is my final destination I have devoted myself to studying the travel guide that gives me details about my final destination. I have the delight of boasting about my personal acquaintance with the kingdom’s loving King. The guide describes ethereal skylines and no lack for attractions. I wasn’t there when my cousin died. At his grave before they could shovel the first dirt I silently whispered ‘bon voyage’ and see you in time. Having found true purpose in life sure makes the journey interesting.

"...My neural travelator conveyed me through the seamless memory chambers."
Your piece is very good, but I'd rather hear more from the part of you that uses a mental'travelator!" I suspect your natural voice is 'out-of-the-box' and singularly refreshing! Do everything you can to set it free.
