Topic: Joy (05/18/06)
“Grandma, what’s joy?” Questions the inquisitive 8-year-old Molly as she climbs upon her grandmother’s ample lap. Grandma smiles her sweet, almost angelic smile as only a grandma can, and slips into her memories of yesteryear.
“Hmmm,” she replies as she leans back with her eyes closed, remembering back to the joyous occasions in her life. “Joy is not only happiness sweetheart, it is a state of mind.”
“How do you mean, Grandma?” Molly asks, perched attentively on Grandmas lap.
“Well, it is the simple things in life, really. Joy is the warm sunshine on your face and the wind in your hair. Joy is watching a butterfly flutter over the beautiful flowers in the field. Joy is waking up in the morning to the lovely melody of the song birds outside your bedroom window. Joy is catching delicate falling snowflakes on your tongue and making snow angels. Joy is petting a newborn kitten, or holding a newborn baby. Joy is spying a beautiful rainbow after a much needed rain. Joy is sitting on your mommies lap as she tells you a story and holds you tight. Joy is falling in love,” Grandma’s eyes misted as she thought of her late husband. “Joy is true friendship, and the greatest joy is knowing the Lord.”
Grandma opened her eyes with a big smile on her face, and tweaks Molly’s little button nose. “And can you believe, that joy, for me, is also doing the dishes?”
“Huh?” Molly giggles in surprise. “Why?”
“Because, my dear,” she explains as she gives Molly a big bear hug, “my joy is my family, and if I didn’t have those dirty dishes in the sink, then that would mean that you would not be here right now.”
“Oh,” Molly’s eyes lit up in understanding. “Like my joy is eating all those cookies you baked for me earlier!”
Grandma laughs at the innocence of the little one before her and gives her another hug. “Yes, darling, it’s exactly like that.”

Yes, it is the simple things in life that bring us joy, like Molly sitting on Grandma's lap. Fun way to teach her about joy and to remind your readers as well.
