My grandchildren, Caleb and Emma, were occupying themselves in the living room while their mother, Julie, was doing the laundry. Caleb, age five, was immersed in his Legos creating a magnificent ship for pirates to take to the sea, while Emma, age three, was across the room with her favorite Little Pony’s lined up on the floor in front of the sofa grooming them for a tea party.
A short time later, Emma looked over at Caleb and noticed all the bright colored Lego pieces lying in a pile and thought it would be fun to help him build the ship. Leaving her Little Pony’s, she scooted across the living room floor and started to pick up the Legos when Caleb quickly responded, “Emma, no.” Determined to help, she continued to take some pieces from the pile and when she didn’t listen to him, Caleb pushed her away. Emma shouted in a loud voice “Stop it, Caleb.” Julie called from the next room, “Caleb, what should you do?” Remembering, Caleb said, “Mommy, I need your help.”
Julie was trying to teach Caleb that Emma was just a little girl, and she would not always understand what he wanted her to do. She realized it could cause him to get upset and feel frustrated, and she wanted Caleb to call her for help before he became angry and acted unkindly towards Emma.
Was the Lord waiting for me to call him? I had not heard from my son for many months so when the phone rang and my husband answered, “Billy?”, I anxiously ran to grab another phone. Sure enough, it was him; I was so excited because our family had been praying he would get in touch with us. I quickly asked how he was and what was going on in his life. As he began to unfold what he had been doing and his plans for the future, they did not include us. Hearing that was very painful and I wondered why the Lord allowed him to call when He know what Billy was going to say.
I became very upset with my son and the Lord as I played the conversation over and over in my mind. My hurt was well on it’s way to anger when a voice spoke to me, “Jean, what should you do?” Remembering what I have been taught by my Heavenly Father, I cried out, “Lord, I need your help.”
Just like my daughter came to Caleb and Emma and helped them sort out their feelings and restore peace between each other, the Lord came to me and helped me sort through my emotions and restore my relationship with Him which enabled me to find comfort and peace.
