Time passed and finally after persevering in prayer, it looked like I would be offered the chance of a lifetime. I could see the answer to my prayer in the distance, like the headlights of a train in the night moving closer and closer. Yet before it fully arrived, it stopped in the middle of the track. In fact, it appeared to me that it was put in reverse and proceeded to back up until it was no longer in my sight. How could this be when my dream was so close? Everything that had been in the works just fell apart. Though it seemed that my dream may not be realized after all, I refused to doubt. My faith would remain in tact as believed this dream was God’s idea and in His time He would fulfill it.
Trusting in God’s faithfulness paid off. Somehow He was making a way where originally there was no way. I would be a part of a team of eight who were traveling together. I was elated! Soon I would be joining the company of those who had made their claim to this great mystery of “coming home.” “Would I too feel as they,” I wondered? The waiting would soon be over.
The day for our departure finally arrived and we boarded our plane and took off. Since many hours of travel lay ahead of us, I knew this was an opportune time to seek the Lord. Already I could feel a special, abiding presence that stayed with me. I knew that He wanted to touch my life in an unforgettable way. He had also challenged me to not settle for anything less than all that He had planned for me. This journey would be unlike any other I had ever embarked upon. I believed I would never be the same after this trip.
Due to many hours of flying, life aboard the 747 began to become wearisome, but just when it seemed like we would never arrive, the announcement came that the plane was making its final descent. We landed in a small Middle Eastern country called Jordan where we were to spend a day doing some sightseeing, and then continue on to our final destination. We traveled across country until we neared the border, and as I scanned the countryside, I saw that there were army tanks hidden behind sand hills and men in towers with machine guns. I never had seen such a sight. Honestly, it caused a bit of uneasiness in my stomach, and made me wonder if I really knew what I was in for.
After our arrival at the border, we waded through customs again. This took such a long time, that by the time we had finished, we were pretty exhausted. We were instructed to board another bus, but this time the experience was different. This time something happened that I didn’t expect. I can’t explain the feeling that came over me. I felt like I wanted to start dancing. Something deep on the inside was exploding with a sense of great joy I had never known before. Then it dawned on me… I was in Israel! My spirit had connected with the presence of God in this Holy Land and I was touched deeply within. As we started down the road along the Jordan River, I saw a sign that said “Jerusalem.” That was all it took. I began to weep uncontrollably and then I realized for the first time I too was “coming home.”
