It is even harder when you are on the road as much as I am. I travel about 50% of the year and it always seems that I’m giving parenting advice from afar. I’m always missing something that I should be there for.
In my life, there have been times that I have asked God to “give me a break.” There were times when the world seemed against me; that nature conspired against me and I could do nothing right. I looked toward Heaven and shook my fists.
God’s answer was more subtle and much more eloquent than I could ever give to my son. God knew that those times of trial were what I needed, even though I didn’t know myself.
God knew that out of adversity comes character. He knew that any friendly advice would have been rejected by a rebellious youth; nothing teaches like experience. His hands molded me into the person I am today.
I learned that giving breaks do not solve problems; they compound them in the future. Giving breaks do not toughen someone up and give that character for the rocky road that is life.
One day my son might thank me for not giving in to his demands. I know that each day I thank God for those breaks not given.
