Outdoors, my uncle chuckled as he helped us get in the back of his pickup truck. All seven of us children were as happy as could be. This was Christmas Day! Earlier, we’d opened our gifts and played with them. Now, not only were we going for a ride that would take a while, it was also snowing. As the truck drove off, we laughed and giggled. At times, we’d stick our tongues out in order to catch snowflakes. We’d have them melt in our mouths. All of it was such a treat! We hardly ever went for rides because my parents didn’t own a vehicle. Christmas was fun!
Once we’d reached my uncle and aunt’s place, we stepped into a house filled with aromas that made one’s mouth water. There was the smell of turkey, meat pies, baked goods and so much more that tantalized our palate. There was enough food to feed an army and as children, we considered that an enormous blessing. We would pig out and eat as much of everything as we possibly could. After all, Christmas only comes once a year!
I remember how the children used to go downstairs and be looked after by the older teenagers. We’d have fun downstairs playing games while the adults drank, sang, danced and told jokes upstairs. Much joy filled the entire home.
When my parents decided that it was time to leave, some of us would be sleeping. We’d be carried to the back of the truck with blankets snugly wrapped around us. Once home, my uncle would help to carry the seven of us to bed. That night, most of us slept in our clothes because it was so late and cold in the house. My father would hurry to light the wood in the stove. We could hardly wait for the house to warm up. My uncle would leave laughing. All were tired, however, happy.
Christmas night for many years was an evening in which we slept so peacefully. We were content, full, and loved. Indeed, it was a blessed day and one of my most treasured memories. Folks, there is much to be said about hospitality. It is quite satisfying, long remembered and much appreciated.
