It was a cool, clear night. Stars studded the immense blackness of what is known as “space.” The moon was illumined, looking like a huge pearl imbedded in black velvet, sprinkled with tiny diamonds.
It was a perfect evening for camping out. Timmy’s dad had set his tent up in the back yard, not far from the house, but far enough to give the boys the feeling of being out away from civilization.
Timmy and Joey were about to embark on their first night out under the stars.
“Joey, just look at all these stars, there are thousands of ‘em.”
“Yep, one day I want to go on a rocket ship into outer space. Maybe even into heaven to see Jesus.” Joey replied.
The boys were lying on there backs staring up at all the stars. Timmy looked at Joey and smiled, “You can’t get to heaven on a rocket ship. Besides, you’re only nine. You can’t go into outer space when you’re nine.
“I know that, but I can when I’m older. I’m going to go through outer space and into heaven where Jesus is.” Joey announced.
“You can’t go through outer space.” Timmy replied.
“Yes, I can, ‘cause when I get old enough to go into space they will have bigger more powerful rockets.”
“But, Mr. Sanderson said ‘you can only get to heaven by asking Jesus to come into your heart and to forgive you for all the bad things you do.”
“Yeah, but he’s just a Sunday school teacher. How does he know that a big powerful rocket ship can’t go through space and into heaven?”
“Because he’s smart he studies the Bible, he knows a lot of things.”
Timmy and Joey were both yawning.
“Well, when Sunday comes again, I’ll ask Mr. Sanderson if it’s possible to go through outer space and into heaven.” Joey said defensively.
“Ok, but he’ll tell you NO!” Timmy said yawning.
“I wonder how far away outer space is. Joey whispered. Dreaming of the day he could make that trip. “Timmy, Timmy!”
Timmy was asleep, possibly dreaming of conquering space himself.
Joey settled into his sleeping bag. Staring into the starry sky as he continued dreaming about Space, The Final Frontier.
