There seems to be great anticipation when we “start” something. There’s a sense of adventure and excitement at the beginning of an experience.
Even with small projects, like cross-stitch or crochet, there’s enthusiasm and fun as you pull out the stitch pattern for the first time. But take a look in my closet and you’ll find numerous unfinished cross-stitch projects. The ones that hurt are the ones I bought, saying, “Yes, I’m going to finish this one. It won’t go in the closet.” But inevitably it ends up there.
Our birthdays or the New Year bring a new beginning to our lives. They become a time of renewal. Having a fresh start brings hope.
So, it can be fairly easy to start something. I have great ideas to start a book, or great intentions to begin an exercise program, even start eating better. The difficult part comes in the middle and in completing the journey.
Where do we find the strength to keep going? Keywords are motivation and discipline. But let’s not forget the real key: faith. When we’re doing what God intends us to do, then we prayerfully have faith that He will provide the motivation, discipline and the courage to complete the task. We should never forget the beginning, those first few exiting steps. And we should always pay attention to the journey itself. Let’s not focus so much on the ending that we ignore what we are learning or seeing in the middle.
We need to start today in praying for God’s will for our journey of life.
