‘Molly are you there?’ Molly could always count on her Mum to turn up unexpectedly when things weren’t going too well. ‘Oh, Mol love. What has happened?’
‘Mum you need to promise me you won’t get too mad, and implode like you usually do … okay?’
‘Okay then.’ Edwina took a deep breath before taking a seat at the other end of the sofa.
‘Um … Glen has walked out on me. He’s got someone else. Oh God, what am I going to do?’
‘Sweetheart, has he been cheating on you? I mean how long has this been going on for? Did you just find out? Did he tell you himself?’
‘One question at a time … please, Mum. Glen did tell me himself. I had no idea that he was seeing anyone else. I feel so stupid. Oh, but it’s so unfair.’ Molly’s tears flowed freely now.
‘Well darling, I can see how upset you are, but if he doesn’t love you and wants to be with someone else, maybe it’s better you find out now, rather than let things fester.’
‘Mum! I’m pregnant! I’m going to have Glen’s baby!’
‘Oooo … my’ gasped Edwina.
‘I’m going to be a grandma? Oh no, are you sure dear? I just can’t do this … not at my age. I’m too young!’
‘Mum! Would you stop thinking of yourself for a change? I have no one except for you. My friends are either too busy to spare a few minutes of their precious time, or they just feel way too daunted by all this. They don’t answer my calls or texts, but I’ve always been there for them.’ Molly sobbed.
‘Molly, you don’t need to keep this baby, you know’ said Edwina biting her bottom lip nervously.
‘I don’t understand’ said Molly. ‘I could never give this baby away. Don’t be silly. What would have happened to me if you’d decided that it was all too hard when you were carrying me, Mum?’
‘No sweetie, I didn’t mean that. I meant that you could end this pregnancy. That way we could all just get on with our lives. I know, you think I’m being selfish, but darling you are way too young for this kind of responsibility. Your life would be ruined. That’s all.’
‘No Mum, I won’t be doing anything like that. You’ve always taught me to be honest and do what's right. You’ve shown me the right thing to do in so many circumstances by your own actions. You would never consider an abortion for yourself, so why the change of heart now?’ demanded Molly as tears made their way down her reddened cheeks.
‘Darling, I thought that’s what you would want. I didn’t mean …’
‘Well don’t just think Mum. I would never do anything to hurt this little life inside me.’
‘Then why are you so upset by all this?' asked Edwina.
‘Oh Mum, don’t you understand anything? I have been betrayed by the love of my life … or so I thought. Now I must raise this child alone. I’m simply scared … okay?’
‘You don’t need to be scared, Molly. I’ll be here for you every step of the way’ Edwina promised.
‘Okay Mum, but don’t forget I’ve always got Him. He will never leave me. No matter what.’
‘Him?’ Edwina looked confused. I thought he left.’
Molly’s eyes lit up with laughter. ‘Oh Mum, I mean Him, Jesus my saviour, my one and only. He loves you too you know.’
‘Thanks for reminding me sweetheart. Sometimes it’s easy to forget. Are you okay?' asked Edwina, a smile beginning to light up her face.
‘You know what? I am. I really am. I am finally free of Glen’s controlling ways. God in His wisdom has given me a gift. A beautiful gift … and the freedom to live my life as He wants.’
