Topic: COFFEE BREAK / TEA BREAK (03/01/18)
The midday heat was so intense it beat down on Jadzia, and the sweat was trickling down her face as she stood and washed the clothes for her family. She wished she could take a break from the sweltering heat. Her head was starting to swim, and she was feeling faint. Just then, her Mama came to check on her. “Jadzia, I can see you are overheating, go take a tea break with your grandmother and I will do the washing for you, for a little while”.



When Jadzia approached her grandmother, she could see her sitting there with her eyes closed. Grandmother's face looked so peaceful. Her aged skin etched with wear and the grey tendrils of hair that fell around her face softened the edges of time. "Grandmother," said Jadzia softly. "What are you pondering about today"? "I was just remembering," she said. "I came to have a tea break with you, and Mama is going to do the washing for me for a little while”. “What were you remembering?” Grandmother poured us each a cup of tea. We went to sit on big pillows and relaxed in the breezeway of the tents.



As we sipped our tea, grandmother started to talk. “I was just a young girl on that day.” At that moment, Jadzia remembered that Mama had told her, her Mother was one of the first ones. "Tell me what it was like," said Jadzia. "I remember waking to a loud thunderous noise, but it was not thunder. The ground was shaking the air was roaring with the wind, and I was getting sprayed with the heavy mist in the air”. My mother was frantic! "Get up Zahara, she said. "It’s time, we must go”!



I looked around, and everyone was gathering their things to depart". "I could see a great wall of water rising, I thought this can’t be real!” My heart was pounding, and I was breathlessly afraid. "Mama, what is going on?" I asked. She said, “God is making way for us to flee from the Egyptians." She then grabbed me by the hand, and we started to run. As we entered the floor of the sea, there were great walls of water on each side of us, and it was loud and unbelievable to see the water’s being held back with such a tremendous force. I was terrified it would let go. My mama said,” Just look straight ahead Zahara and watch your step”.





Everyone was running for their lives! I glanced back to look, and there was a sea of people behind us. People were yelling” the Egyptians are coming”!!! The look of fear on their faces is still engraved in my mind. I was so consumed with the moment; I didn't feel my hand slip from my mother. I turned around, and all I could see was everyone running in fear. My foot hit a rock and my ankle twisted and down I went. I was crying and screaming for my Mama… I could not move… I tried to stand, but everyone was plowing to get through the sea. I sat down and cried as people went past me. I thought I was going to die there that day, that somehow God forgot about me.





After the crowd thinned out, I felt a hand touch my head, I looked up, and it was my Mother. She came back to find me. I was so relieved to see her. She lifted me up in her arms and carried me the rest of the way. As we neared the other side, I could see the Egyptians following behind catching up. My Mama was getting tired, a man came down from the edge to help us the rest of the way. Just as we got to shore the waters let go with a loud thunderous swoosh and the Egyptians were hurled into the sea.



"Grandmother, that is an incredible story! I am in awe of what you just told me". I heard of the great crossing of the Red Sea but never felt it so deeply as I have today. As the tea and the coolness of the shade settled in along with the story of my grandmothers crossing, I almost forgot, I needed to get back to the washing. "Thank you for sharing your story with me grandmother". She nodded and smiled at me as I got up and went back to my chores.
