We can disagree on the simplest things as people, even as simple as the colour of an object. But is there anyone to blame for that? Of course not. Everyone being truthful in a disagreeable way. As much as it has something to do with the eye, it could be as a result of ignorance as well. For instance, there are different shades of blue, however two people are likely to disagree on the “ocean blue” with one calling it a “royal blue”. This is because that’s how it is seen, or the other person has no knowledge of there being an “ocean blue” which has been somewhat clearly differentiated from the “royal blue”. The colour “turquoise”, can easily pass for a light green when one is ignorant of the fact that it is a shade of blue. Brides to be have a way of making us all aware of our ignorance when we realise we have no clue about their choice of colour for their weddings.



So, we find that when it comes to colours there is nothing really wrong with the object in question but the individual who beholds it. Because colour in itself is not inherent in an object, the surface of the object reflects light when light falls on it. We on the other hand, perceive the reflected light which causes us to see the object as having a particular colour. This happens in conjunction with the brain which interprets and names the colours. So then if we don’t know the colour, its name, or have anomalies with respect to the sensitivity to the certain colours we won’t be actually seeing a lot of colour, one such as blue. And if we see it we might interpret it wrongly.



So then how is it that most people can see the blue sky, blue sea, blue birds, and the amazing way in which our eyes are able to behold colours, but are not able to see the God who made all of those things through the colour? They can see blue but can’t see God though it is visible in the color. Just as colour is not inherent in the object, God may not be inherent in His creation, but if particular objects always give off certain colours, then is the colour not somewhat inherent it in, just like with God? We can be sure that the objects He created, and their colours are giving off reflections that make Him undeniably invisible, if we will look more closely (Romans 1: 19-22). Their eyes may be good but there is a hidden defective.



We were ones like them having defective eyes, but we received grace and help and now its our turn to extend it (Matthew 28:18-20)as the second pair of eyes. So, then people may not be truly seeing the God we serve because they can’t put a name on it. That’s where we come in to tell the world about God and show them how visible He is through our lives. Others have trouble seeing it rightly because there are lots of things blurring and blinding them, causing them to have defective cones which interpret what they see differently. And we have been called to be their “spectacles”, our lives and words being used by God as s solution to the anomaly through which they would see God clearly and draw close to Him.



There is a reason God called us to be the light of the world, because the light that is reflected to the eye can surely be deceptive if its not of God who is light (1 John 1:5)but of the devil who can pretend to be the angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). Seeing colours is very much dependent on light and so is seeing God which is why He did not leave the world without His light and called us to be the light. Our lives reflect off God to people if we live it in obedience to Him and doing that boldly without compromising. And yes, there are people who have seen God through everything and yet refuse to accept His name. But the fact remains whether they deny it or not. You can decide to call an “ocean blue” a royal blue when you know its not right, and try explaining with different concepts. God is real and we see Him all around us. It’s our duty as His children to reflect Him off as well.
