I spent many years working to make a home for my family—a place where my children could grow and mature in safety and comfort. I home schooled my little ones for nine years, putting my plans on the back burner so that their dreams had room to ripen and develop. I wanted them to be competent and independent as they went out into the world, but I still had a need to be needed. I didn’t want my nest to be empty. How could home still be home without the children who made it all necessary and gave me purpose in life?
The phone rang at 3:00 in the morning startling me out of a deep sleep. As my heart pounded in my throat, I listened as my son said, “Mom, I fell and hurt my ankle going down the stairs today. Now it is throbbing, and I don’t know what to do.” “Oh, honey,” I sighed. “I know it must hurt. Take some pain medicine and prop your foot up. Do you have anything cold that you can put on it?” “I don’t think so,” he groaned. “Mom, could you pray for me like you always did at home?”
I knew then that home would always be home no matter how far away they traveled or how much they loved their new residences. Because home is not a physical address built with bricks and lumber; home is a relationship built with time and love.
