CONFESSIONS OF A NON-TEXTER.



I hate texting and some people think I am crazy for hating texting. Maybe so, but I still hate texting.



People have all kinds of reason for liking or hating something. I know that some people will say I am old fashioned. Still, I have my likes and dislikes. In this case I think I am right for all the right reasons. Here they are:



1. People forget how to have meaningful friendships.



They have so many friends on social networks. Yet, they have no time to build meaningful friendships. Friendship building is an art and takes time. Texting is for immediate self-gratification.



2. Grammar suffers when texting.



Just listen to people who text all the time. Their grammar is unrecognizable. Language rules have been kicked out the door to save a few key strokes and a little space.



3. Texters do not know how to carry on a real conversation.



The whole art of conversation is lost. You can’t have a real conversation with fragments of words. This causes a lack of understanding between the people involved. You can’t have a conversation with you children at the dinner table anymore. Why? because someone across the table, or next to them is texting. It may be a friend from school or a brother or sister at the table with them.



4. Spelling is becoming a lost cause.



It will take more than a “National Spelling Bee” to correct the damage done to spelling by texting. People don’t care how a word is spelled. Just use as few key strokes as possible and hope the other party knows what you mean.



5. Motor Vehicle Safety.



According to the last safety reports – Distracted driving while texting causes more accidents than drunk drivers. However, it is uncertain which is the leading cause of death. I personally don’t want to be hit by either one. Either way you are just as dead.



6. Lack of attention to what is being taught in class.



Kids are more interested in finding a way to text without getting caught than what is taught. I wonder just how much cheating is going on by texting test answers to a classmate. One way teachers could eliminate this problem would be to use essay questions. Those answers would be too long for a text. One more school related problem – Who really sent that excuse for yesterday’s absence?



7. Lose of a whole profession.



No one will be writing books because we will have forgotten how to read them. Compared to what we find in books today, texting is just plain unintelligent marks on a page. And what about your morning paper? What would happen if Readers Digest tried to condense a text?



8. Confusion on medical information.



I have nightmares about my medical records being reduced to text. And what about my prescriptions? Can you imagine your prescription with half of the ingredients left out?



9. Government forms



It is true that most government forms could be reduced in length, but what confusion would there be if you tried to fill it out in ”text”? Just think what could happen with forms from the IRS, Social Security Administration, or the Veterans Affairs.



10. Just think what we would miss in music.



If we quit using our voice, according to evolution, we would lose the ability to talk or sing. I enjoy music too much to even think about it. Jesus put a song in my heart, and I want it to come out in praise to HIM.



11. Reverence would return to our worship services.



If your church is like most churches today, reverence gives place to texting. From children to adults, including grandmas, they are texting someone, possibly in the same service or row. They don’t care who they may be distracting. I see it from the pew and from the pulpit. It makes no difference what’s going on.



I can’t help it, this upsets me. I come to church to worship God. He saved me from a life of sin and deserves all the reverence and praise we can give HIM.



Yes! I am opposed to texting. I will not apologize for hating texting, especially in church. Save your thumbs, don’t text.



I’ll end my rant now. Leave your cell phone at home; let’s go to church and worship God.

You gave some very compelling arguments against texting. I can only think of a couple of good reasons for texting.

You were very clear and precise about what you were writing about. I would like to see you take a couple of hose points and bring them to life by showing us what texting does to break down communication. Show a diner with texting, show what devastation comes from texting while driving.

Use dialogue to break up and give life to your writing.
