These were just some of the questions that flew through his head as he walked the prairie in search of his nephew. Paulie had disappeared a few weeks earlier, leaving an obscure note saying, “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.” Under normal circumstances Jason wouldn’t have bothered. If his nephew wanted to leave, let him leave, he’s of age. But circumstances were not normal.
When he researched the quote on Paulie’s note, he found that it was the last words of the 16th century French Renaissance writer, François Rabelais, and that made it sound like a suicide note. But Jason knew that Paulie would never do that, not now. Sure there had been a time, even attempts in the past, but that was the past. Paulie had worked through everything when he found the LORD. He even got a semicolon tattoo to raise awareness for mental health, depression, and suicide prevention awareness. The semicolon, he’d said, signified that the sentence wasn’t finished yet. This was not a suicide. This was something else.
Jason had gone to the LORD in prayer night after night, pleading for answers, questioning, letting his desires be known. The desire to know what happened, what Paulie did or didn’t do, was he dead or alive, or was he hurt somewhere, or kidnapped, or did he just take off? So many questions, so many prayers, and the only answer he go was, “Go find out for yourself.” So he left home and comfort, friends and family, in order to find his nephew and to know, once and for all, what happened.
Now, halfway across the prairie, the huge expanse of nothingness, greater than the greatest ocean, the barrier to the edge of forever, Jason encountered this eerie, supernatural, effervescent light. He stopped in his tracks, examining the light, trying to figure out what might be causing it. As he looked, the light in front of him coalesced, forming a brilliant, glowing cherubim. The rest of the atmosphere around him continued to glow and shimmer, still coming from everywhere. But the cherubim just seemed to materialize out of coagulated light. It was 10 feet tall, winged, and dressed in shimmery blue armor of light. The broadsword he carried radiated brilliant red light. His piercing eyes twinkled with the starlight of a billion galaxies in deep dark pits.
Jason stood, jaw agape, mind reeling, trying to figure out what his eyes were beholding. All the questions that had swirled through his head just moments before were replaced with just one, “What the…?”
The cherubim angled its sword in such a way to challenge, but not to threaten. A voice reverberated out of its being, “What do you seek?”
Swallowing hard, trying to pull his stomach out of his throat, Jason replied, “I’m looking for my nephew, Paulie.”
The sword shifted subtly, still not quite threatening, but more challenging than before. “What do you seek?” the cherubim asked again.
“My nephew, Paulie. He disappeared a few weeks ago. I thought maybe he came this way. Please, have you seen him?”
The cherubim quickly shifted the sword, clearly threatening now, light flashing everywhere, “What do you SEEK?”
Jason’s mind clicked, shifted, and he responded, “I go to seek a Great Perhaps!”
Prismatic light shot in all directions from the sword and the cherubim held it high above his head. The snow stopped, the clouds cleared, and the prairie faded away into a beautiful garden. Paulie was there, grinning. “I knew you’d figure it out Uncle Jason. Welcome to the garden of the Great Perhaps.”
