If he can’t physically allure you to his dungeons, then he attempts to manipulate your mind. He feeds on human pride convincing you that you are too “academic” or “educated” to believe in a spiritual realm and a loving God. “It is just not logical to believe in something you cannot see,” says the Warden. “The resurrection is impossible, a fable for deluded, unintelligent dreamers who need a crutch to aid them with the harshness of reality.”
But every human being is built to worship the Lord, and the Warden can only fight against this need for so long. Humans need meaning and hope to survive as much as they need physical food to nourish their bodies and the Warden, being the clever deceiver that he is, understands this. So he plays along with this need to worship, only directing it elsewhere. He gives people the ideas of fictional heroes: Superman, Batman, the Incredible Hulk, and Spiderman. All these figures achieve great things and have a goal of helping humankind, things the Warden despises, but the Warden compromises with these characters because they take the focus off the ultimate superhero: Jesus Christ. He uses anything he can to take people’s focus off the Mighty One—cars, sports, shopping and money—to name a few. But these earthly gods only briefly divert the need to worship the true King.
I searched far and wide to find God. I enjoyed the life of a hedonist, pleasuring my way to God. I looked to women to ease my pain, but still I felt unfulfilled. Then I tried to think my way to God. I delved into philosophical ideologies and different perspectives of the historical Jesus. But still I couldn’t find truth. I still felt helpless and alone. I believed in Jesus Christ, the creator of the universe, the source of everything, the great I AM, the Alpha and Omega, the Author of Peace, the Mighty One of Israel, the Tower of Salvation; but I felt nothing. In my mind, Christianity was a fraud. Finally, I fell to my knees acknowledging that I was a sinner and that nothing in this world could satisfy my insatiable desire to know the truth. Incomprehensibly, the Holy Spirit entered my life and rescued me from the Warden. By Jesus Christ’s grace alone I have escaped Satan and will never enter his prison again.
