It was everything that I wanted in a well-ordered package. It was my calling neatly orchestrated by a man who had done it before, he had the experience and now he was willing to share it with a limited number of people for a limited time but at a cost that might as well have been the moon because I didn’t have it.
Did I make the right decision…?
In a broken moment, a fraction of time, I was at the base of a great mountain. It was not unlike Everest but still not that great pinnacle of the Earth. I stood in awe at the greatness of it. “Amazing”, I thought.
A man dressed in a robe with a sash around his chest walked up next to me. He had long thick hair and a beard. Standing on my right side he rested his left hand on my shoulder and looked at the mountain with me.
“See those people right there?” he asked.
I had to strain to see but finally my eyes focused in on the flags flapping flamboyantly in the wind.
“Those are my people. I taught them everything they needed to know to get to that camp and what they need to know to go all the way to the top, and… I did it yesterday”.
“Wow!’ I exclaimed. ‘That’s what I’ve always wanted to do, to make the summit.”
“And you can’, he said, ‘with my training and my experience you can do it. You can make it to the top faster than everyone else because I’ll show you all the mistakes people make that cause them to be unsuccessful.”
As the vision faded I recognized the familiar voice of God’s Spirit. “Was that really Jesus there with you?”
I thought about the man’s words and I answered, “No, Jesus paid the price for me on the cross and would never ask me to share in the cost.”
“That’s right, though he was not Jesus, do you believe in his offer?”
Again after some thought I answer, “It’s impossible. If I were to go to that height tomorrow I would not have enough oxygen for my brain to function and my body would slowly die. I would never make the summit.”
“To have you your God given purpose fulfilled in this earth there is but one way, and that way is Jesus,” the Spirit said. “He is the way the truth and the life.” (John 14:6)
“Search the Word and see.”
So I got out my bible and found my way to Isaiah 28:10 which says:
“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little.”
The Spirit began to teach me, he began to unravel the truth. God works with us teaching us a little at a time. For me to make the summit of my mountain I must gather a little from here and there all the necessary equipment to survive the harsh weather that the mountain creates. I must take one small step at a time. I must rise up and up and fall down and get back up so that I can become strong. I must spend time at the camp in the presence of others on the same mountain. I must acclimate.
As the Spirit of God spoke to me his words rang true in my heart. I had peace about my choice. The final words of our conversation came from the book of Habakkuk in the third chapter and 19th verse:
“The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hind’s feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places...”
This sealed Gods promise to me and reignited the passion for the purpose that has created me for. Finally there is a sure light to my path. Now it is only up to me to have faith and take the first step for “Faith without works is dead” as James 2:14 excellently states.
So confidently I shut off my TV and picked up my pad and pen and began to write.
