Shortly after high school Jack met the love of his life, Tiffany. She was athletic, bright and beautiful. Tiffany had long brown hair that shown in the sunlight. Her green eyes sparkled when she laughed. She filled his dreams each night. I’m going to marry that girl. They dated for over two years. Several times Jack started to ask her to marry him. On the surface they seemed like a beautiful couple. But the engagement never got started.
One day he called her for a date. “Sorry Jack, but Tom and I are getting married next month.” Tiffany replied.
Jack had no reply. The blood rushed to his face as he hung up the phone. Tom was his best friend.
Last year he put off starting his garden until it was too late. There was frost on the ground that morning.
He put off getting a new battery for his pick-up. Which friend would give him a jump start this time? One day he got stranded and he could find no one to give him a jump start. Jack was forced to buy that battery.
One day he flipped the light switch in his front room, and nothing happened. He had failed to replace the light bulbs in the celling fixture as they burned out one by one. Now he was in the dark. Where are those spare bulbs and the step stool?
More than once he got the second notice on his gas bill, and rushed out to pay it before they shut off his gas. Most of the time he got there before the office closed for the day. But one time he was too late. He returned the next day and had to pay a late fee.
I need to paint this house, he thought one sunny spring day. But tomorrow never came. He woke up one morning in October and realized that if he did not start, he would have to wait until spring.
He rushed down to the hardware store for supplies. Tomorrow is the day I get this house painted. But as he went to prepare the house for painting the wind was blowing so hard, he reconsidered. I’ll get started tomorrow. Maybe the weather will be better.
Then there was the time Jack got stopped for a burned out tail-light. Jack pulled out his wallet when the cop asked, “Vehicle registration and driver’s license please.” He did a double take when he discovered his license had expired. The cop wrote him a ticket for driving without a license, but only gave him a warning for the burned-out tail light. Jack cringed as he realized that his auto insurance was also due the next day.
Jack’s problem was not that he could not finish a project. He just could not get it started. Jack knew he should get started on various projects, but his start button just didn’t seem to work. When he did do a job, it was done very well.
Poor Jack, he kept putting things off. He was a procrastinator all his life. When he retired, he had even less motivation to get started.
“Tomorrow” was the story of Jack’s life. At 69 Jack put off living. His tombstone reads, “I never got started”.
