I never thought of myself as being unmarketable before, I had to face the reality of being unemployed. I honestly didn’t know how to reinvent myself in today’s market, where being in your fifties is considered obsolete. The only thing I knew for sure was that I was ready for a fresh start, but couldn’t come to a resolve as to what that start was. In the midst of my identity crisis, an unexpected door was opened, presenting me with the opportunity to see things from another perspective.
A friend of the family, along with another couple was about to renew their vows, and it so happened that my friend came over for dinner one evening. I prepared and served a simple dinner; we gathered around the table to partake of God’s blessing, then they began to compliment me on the food. During dinner they continue to express their sentiments; they couldn’t stop commenting on how delicious the food was. They further implied that I could have a successful future in the food industry. They were enthused with the idea of me perusing a career in catering, that the effect spilled over in my heart, and the idea began to resonate within me. I could actually see myself doing and enjoying this type of career. Although I was very grateful for their support and I appreciated their encouragement: I felt helpless. I was financially challenged and was not in a position to start a business.
When I went to church that Sunday, I was confronted by my friend’s friend, she told me that she had heard glowing reports about my food. She said, “I heard you can cook, Miss. Thing.” I was surprised; the only thing I could do was to chuckle. Out of that dining experience came an unexpected proposal; I was asked to cater their wedding renewal dinner. How exciting was that for me? I was honored and elated. They entrusted me to provide a crucial service on a momentous occasion; I was totally flabbergasted.
Although this was an enormous undertaking I was intrigued at the prospect, and I embraced the challenge. There were no doubt or reservation as to whether I could do this or not. I was ready, willing, and definitely eager to get started. This was a pleasant turn of events, and I was determined to make my mark.
In the coming weeks, my clients and I had several meetings in which we discussed the event in further details. This was going to be a winter wonderland wedding and it involved careful planning. We discussed the décor, venue, budget, and menu along with strategizing how to efficiently manage the flow of guests. I made my presentation and it was accepted, I was given a fixed budget for the event, and it was extremely important to me to manage the budget effectively, in order to give my clients a bang for their buck.
I had lots of fun preparing for the event. I was in my element; I was surprisingly calm, relaxed and extremely organized. I enjoyed the hunt as I scoured the city for bargains and sales. Food shopping for a large crowd was an experience; it thought me some valuable lessons. As the big day arrived, I went on autopilot, getting things ready, and putting everything in place for the guest to experience a magical and unforgettable moment in time.
The event was a huge success, and the meal was definitely a crowd pleaser. I was elated to see my vision came to fruition.
This event empowered me and illuminated my potential. I was able to showcase my craft, abilities, and talents. It highlighted my marketability and spearheaded me in a new career direction. Wow, I am not obsolete after all. God is good!
