I look out of my window and see the odd leaf stubbornly clinging onto the skeletal walnut tree. Only a short ago it was fully clothed creating a huge shadow from the sun and a screen from the world.
Now it’s almost bare, dead-looking. Barren. Even though the sun shines and the sky is a clear blue, the heat of the sun doesn’t penetrate my soul.
Life feels empty and dry, like the curling leaves that flutter downwards to make the winter carpet.
Empty and dry, the tree and I echo each other, I look at it and sigh “ah yes, that’s exactly where I am right now” and I long for the hard winter of dormancy to be over and spring to come. I yearn for the sap to flow and the warmth to flood my innermost being, to be re-awakened as the first flush of growth that started my new-life.
Even as I feel cold and long for warmth I know that everything has its time, that each season is a necessity in my life – it can’t always be summer. So every day I plead to the roots to strengthen me and protect me from the harsh elements all around and make me bloom more vigorously and produce more fruit and more seeds and more saplings and more and more. Not for me, but for eternity.
