I found a photo in the internet
And it speaks too well for me
The palm’s center emblazons the need
To teach us all to pray.
We should have learned in grade school
No doubt from family and friends;
But all too soon to know
It’s not as easy as it seems.
They too have angst we never knew
And may be groping like we do,
Just as youngsters on the raw
Out to make bids on what life can do.
Where do we find You then my Lord?
Do we hold up our hands to praise?
Your greatness in the heavens
Down to this earth we occupy
Where once You lived and died.
Hold up your thumb sign of victory
God has risen for all eternity.
Do we find you in our inner self?
As our conscience pricks to hurt,
That we just have to bare our soul
And seek forgiveness for our faults.
Wave your index finger that warns you
Of the many pitfalls on the route.
Do we find it difficult to pray?
Even with God listening and guiding our way,
Know that the whats, the whys, and the hows
Are all the whens encased in God’s large hand.
Point up your middle finger to heaven’s realm
Give thanks in joyous dance and singing.
Do we find You then in calamitous events?
Or in children maligned and abandoned;
Or people who knew no better
And wasted a life designed for living.
Show your ring finger to bring in compassion
Invite prayers for one and all the better.
No matter how small the circle will be
Remember the filling is for you and me.
Meet up your thumb and little finger
As in all things created, God is there.
Yes –
We find You in springtime when all our dreams arise
We find You in summer when hopes are fired up by light
We find You in fall in simmering things awaiting
We find You in winter in faith meditating.
Oh Lord
Hold us up in Your hands.
