“Love’s first kiss”….a witch says with mockery and sarcasm. Go ahead, mock at love harbinger of death and destruction, the bride will arise at the kiss of Bridegroom and love will win.
She doesn’t fear the witch. Her Lover rides a horse of white and she trusts in His name, Faithful and True One. When He speaks His words are like a two-edged sword that divides and conquers. The witch may mock but the bride looks into His eyes with flames of loves fire and speaks to Him: “My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast.” Psalms 57:7
They often meet under an old apple tree in the vineyard and lie in the cool grass. They laugh and whisper together as young lovers will do. She wants to know all about Him and He freely shares His thoughts, ideas, and teachings with her.
One day He comes to the vineyard and His eyes are serious. He tells her He must go away. He asks her not to sit under the tree with anyone else. The witches companions are often about and they will try to deceive her. The bride is distressed at His news. “Please don’t go”, she cries. He reassures her that even though she can’t always feel Him, He is always with her. “You can speak to me anytime and I will hear you and answer you.” This is a new aspect of their relationship and she doesn’t like it. She begs Him to stay with her. “I am always with you”, He repeats. She is not satisfied with these words.
She watches Him walk away to the mountains. Over the weeks she yearns for Him and just as He told her He is always near. His voice echoes in her heart and her trust grows. Sometimes she sees Him leaping over the mountains, her Conqueror.
She is harvesting the grapes and looks again towards the mountains She sees a gold and silver palanquin carried by many valiant men. Her heart and mind race: “Who is this coming out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense…..” Song of Solomon 3:6. It is her Beloved!
He greets her with praise at how beautiful she has grown while He was away. There love is deeper, richer. They spend many happy days in joyous reunion. She tells Him the witch has sometimes come into their garden but she used the sword just as He taught her and drove the witch away. His eyes are filled with pride and joy at the maturity He finds in her.
He again tells her He must go to the wilderness but this time He asks her to go with Him. They are gone many months. Her loved ones watch for her and at her return they ask with awe in their voices: “ Who is this coming up from the wilderness, leaning upon her Beloved?” Song of Solomon 8:5 She has learned to trust the Bridegroom in every season of her life. Her beauty and wisdom have increased under the watchful love of His eyes. She has learned to say; “My Beloved is mine, and I am his.” Song of Solomon 2:16.
