The burgundy wine had found its birth and conception in a derelict vinery. Neglected and abandoned, the once proud vines had lay wait until the moment when someone would see within them much more than their tangled futility. One day, enchanted by the potential, a quiet affable stranger strode amongst the stagnant waste. As he did so, he closed his eyes to see. There, in the vineyard of his mind, the golden sun shone on row after row of emerald vines, bowing in honor with the weight of their fruit. Only he saw the magic in the broken, gnarled vines.
Dredging the dream from the earth was a seemingly unsurpassable task but the man proved himself diligent. And in deference to his love and labor, green life painstakingly stepped up the deadened vines. They reached upwards in pursuit of new fervor, each tiny tendril grasping and embracing the sturdy stalks that lovingly hedged them in, entwining themselves in security. In time, the vines matured and fathered buds and, those buds pushed forth new leaves. Man and vine toiled diligently side by side, and both stood rewarded with the nascent of the fruit. The ground who had once worn death now wore vitality; the formerly dormant vineyard had been restored to its original glory. One day, enchanted by the majesty he now stood amongst, the quiet affable stranger resolved to share the jewel of his heart’s labor- its bounty. His offering to the world would be the lush lavish wine, sweet to the taste, and rich in its nuances.
The velvety elixir glistened garnet as it flowed into two glasses; exploding with an exquisite blend of fruit and flower as it met the silky smoothness of the vessel that would hold it. Each cup was raised in a toast, to honor someone very dear. The wine had been selected carefully and was poured in ceremony to commemorate this very special day. Two sets of lips kissed the rims of two different glasses as the deep crimson of the wine escaped into their mouths. The rich, bold flavor first shocked and then caressed the tongue of the taster; bringing to life the glory of the fruit of the vine.
Here, as the first glass was raised, the painstaking efforts of the gentle vineyard worker drifted upward in accolade with the melodious scents of the musky wine and the incense of prayer. Here the wine found solemn honor as it took its place at the head of the Lord’s Supper. Here, as it gracefully flowed down the throat, it brought with it the remembrance of Christ.
There, as the second glass was raised, the efforts of the vine were wasted on the drinker as she lurched inelegantly onto the sofa. The swig that played across her lips was meant for naught but to chase away the fog from her mind. There, as it flowed recklessly down her throat, it brought with it the riotous remembrance of the night before but, not that of who or what the party hand been in honor of.
Amongst the rows of jade, aglow with crimson and the deepest violet, the quiet affable man gazed deeply at the indigo pearls in his hand. Any bystander would assume that he was inspecting their quality as intently as he had done on any other day but,
reflected in each tender globe he could see, a single glass raised.
