My dad found a tiny plant in the woods that he said was a running rose. He bought it home and transplanted it in the flowerbed close to our front door. It grew and grew to an
enormous size. The vine ran all over the front porch, and we had to cut the vine back keeping it from running inside the front door. Over a year had passed since my father planted the plant and still there came no rose buds.
Our neighbor laughs and said, “it’s just a weed: if it was me I would cut that thing down.”
Fall passed around again; two years since this vine was planted, and still no roses. My dad
lovingly continue to care for this plant He would fertilize it when it needed it. In summer I also spritz it daily with water and sprayed it with rose bug spray to keep the pests away.
We had hoped it would grow beautiful roses, but our hope was beginning to fade. Had my dad’s knowledge of plants let us down? Were we expecting a weed to do the impossible? My heart was yearning for the fruit of this vine. Finally we pruned it back and left it alone.
Two weeks went and we decided to pull the vine up. Then to my surprise, I noticed beautiful red buds all over the vine. I rejoiced over the rose vine, because it was
truly a rose vine, and not a just a wild weed after all.
I am so glad Jesus doesn’t give upon us, for we are the branches of him. Jesus is our vine. Without him we can’t bear much fruit like a rose vine and if we don’t bear fruit we can get cut from the vine.
