Mummy, mummy is it time yet?
One minute my dearest, then happy new year.
Mummy, mummy is it time yet?
No! Thirty seconds...

8... Where has the time gone this year? So much has happened, I feel that my life has been attacked and my existence wrung by an old fashioned mangler. My family has been so turned upside down, and I feel so lost that even if I had a magic compass to show me where or what I should do, I don't think I would be able to even find my way. No wonder I feel so flattened and deflated.

7... Seven; that's when it all started, seven months ago. That two-timing snake in the grass left me, after I found him in bed with the childminder. I know I probably would have forgiven him and tried to work it out, I know what a sap I must be. But she was only eighteen and I used to look after her when she was much younger. She was almost like another daughter to me. Ten years ago, my husband of five years and I met at a church youth group. I thought we would be married for ever and have loads of children. How wrong I was.

5... Five months ago we defaulted on the rent. He has neither helped pay it nor contributed to his daughter. He says he does not live there, so does not have to. At least he does still see his daughter, even if only for two hours per week.

3... Three months ago I finally got a job and moved into a smaller, more affordable place; prayer does work. Never realised how hard it was to get a job especially after being out of the workforce for five years. He always said he would be the breadwinner and I was to look after the family. I even tried to get a part time job when she started pre-school but he would have none of it. I think he liked the idea of me being chained to the home and totally reliant on him. I guess the problem really started when I decided I needed to go back to college and do a refresher course. I thought, 'my fault I am in this situation. I should just have done what he wanted.' It was during one of my courses that he was doing the babysitter... why am I blaming myself? I never asked him to try and sharpen his pencil! I can't believe he said that as an excuse, 'sharpening his pencil' - who uses that terminology? I used to be so confident when I was younger, now look at me. Must make a mental note: I am not responsible for anyone else’s actions, just my own, and should not let anyone manipulate me.

2... Two months ago, he stopped seeing his daughter. She feels so rejected. It makes me so mad. What sort of person just walks away from their child! It breaks my heart to see her so confused and hurting. To think he wanted more children... Initially I was devastated when we couldn't have anymore, or should I say I couldn't. If he is treating one child like this, what would he have done to more? How many lives would he have devastated? I know I am really bitter right now, but who would blame me?

1... One month ago he came back, but not to stay. He came up to his daughter and informed her she is going to have a new baby sister. Also, 'He's' going to marry the babysitter and MY daughter will have a new mummy... what a complete... if I could've got my hands on him, I probably would have swung for him. Not looking forward to Christmas.
Two weeks ago we started attending a new church around the corner and my daughter and I have made new friends. They have really helped us make a fresh start. The last seven months were totally full of bitterness, my new church family have helped me regain my faith. I have not totally forgiven my ex but I no longer hate him. Maybe, for now, that is the best I can offer.

Spent Christmas day at church.

I give her a massive hug and hold her for what must have seemed forever, but was only ten seconds.

She pleads, “Now can I have my chocolate ice-cream?”

I was happy to learn this was fiction. You did a good job of convincing me this was a real person's tale. Wow, such a clear look at a very common situation in today's world as well as a common response to it. I'd love to see the conflict resolved more solidly in this piece. Perhaps using the peace and love of Jesus as the cure? Keep on writing, you have the knack!

I agree with Sheldon, I am glad to find out this was a fictional story!

I really liked the way you threaded the story onto the theme of the seconds corresponding to the months and the new start. That was very original, I thought.

You've crafted a very different and unusual approach to the topic. It gives pause to think and reflect, as I read this it seemed to have an "authentic" voice, and unfortunately somewhere this might be someone's story...so I see where you went with this.

Brilliant and well written.
