“Take me back to my room,” my eighty-five year old father grumbled loudly. Mother didn’t hear him and continued pushing him in his wheelchair down the rest home hall. With both her hearing aids on full mother could hear almost nothing. She visited my father daily. Every day she found him in his room in a wheelchair. At each visit she took him for a walk.
“This is such a pretty day,” mother would cheerfully say, “how about we go for a walk?” She would then push my father in the wheelchair down the hall. He would mumble and growl that he wanted to return to his room. Mother couldn’t hear a word he said. She serenely pushed him on. She pointed out the framed pen and ink drawings of famous movie stars from decades past hanging on the corridor walls.
“Look, there’s Shirley Temple,” mother would say.
My father’s unhappy reply, “Take me back to my room. I want to go back to my room.”
All during the walk mother would point out the drawings. My father would demand she return him to his room. This continued the entire stroll.
Mother appreciated the artist’s work. My father ignored it. He couldn’t care less. My father also ignored the Bible and its eternal wisdom. Not my mother. The Bible was the compass that pointed her to heaven.
After the passing of both my parents my father left a small inheritance that was quickly gone. My mother left a priceless heritage that had an eternal goal. I saw it in her final advice found written in her old worn Bible. Here is what it said:
“To my Children
I leave this old book as the best heritage I can give. Study it carefully and you will find the way to peace and righteousness and happiness as I have done. If there is ever anything wrong with your lives come back to this book as if it were a looking glass and it will clearly show you what is the matter. And when you are lost in the world it will guide you home.
Mother”
My mother passed her love for God and His written Word on to me. The Bible is my life compass. It points home. The time will come, as it has and will for every person, when I spend my last day on earth. I’ll go to my eternal home because the written Word will have shown me the way. The Bible is my heritage in spirit and in ink.

My entry this week in Level 3 is also about an old Bible. If you can find it and leave me a comment.
I enjoyed your story. Thanks for sharing.
The transition in time and space was well accomplished.
I wonder if we should pass first, should we write something to our spouse as well as to each of our children.
Maybe? why not?
