Let’s start one month prior. I was sprawled out on the couch, the T.V. playing in the distant. What a gloomy day, I thought. Then suddenly, the house phone blared out, disturbing the quiet. My breath staggered as I sat up. I wasn’t expecting a call from anyone, but then again I was.
About a week ago I had applied to a game like, prize winning competition where ten contestants vote one person off every week depending on how much that person is liked. We are set one a secluded island, we have access to the beach as well as other areas like the jungle. It’s all luxury, no catch right? Well I prayed there wouldn’t be one. I was wrong. Of course I was wrong. I always am.
The catch is that, we have to make friends, alliances with the other contestants to dwindle the chance of getting voted off the island. But as our numbers started to lessen, we started to vote away our friends. Losing faith and hope in one another is….is the worst feeling in the world. There are only six of us left. And the only thought in our minds is; who is going to be next?
I clutched the jacket around my shoulders, shuffling through the white sand. The sun had long set, the wind was blowing bitterly. It was time to vote. A silent prayer went past my lips, rising into the air towards Heaven. I hope God could hear me. I don’t want to leave just yet.
The fire shot up in the air, dancing to the music of the wind. I sat on a log, I think it was a cedar, but now it was just a lonely stump that shadows crept around. The other contestants gathered around the fire as well, some standing some sitting. We all have one thing in common now; none of us are smiling. Now we write on a card. We write the name of the contestant whom we want gone.
My hand quickly scribbled a name; John. He is a tall man with big bushy eyebrows and no hair. We never smiled, even when things weren’t tense.
Caleb, the man with grey streaks in his hair, took a small bucket and collected the cards from us. He would read them out, and the one with the most votes would leave the island on a small, privet jet, heading back to the gloom of a house routine.
Caleb’s wrinkled hand reached into the bucket and grabbed a card; his shaky voice filled the air and broke the unsettling silence.
“One vote for Carla.” My eyes lingered on the sand in front of me. My name was called?
A blush spread to my cheeks as my name was called four more times. Five votes? Was I really that disliked? Sighing I stood and walked down the beach to dip my bare feet in the lapping water of the ocean. Looks like my time is up for this game. Looks like I got voted off the island. But one thing I have learned is certain. Distrust can shake the boat that you sit.
