How can I love rules?
How can rules love me?
Rules are achievement-based,
Motivating me to earn myself trophies
So I may admire them on my shelf.
Rules give me a yardstick
That I may justify myself
And judge others.
Rules are cold and faceless.
How can I love rules?
I follow outwardly,
But my heart rebels,
Scorning, complaining, doubting,
Boasting of my triumphant self-sacrifice.
Or justifying and diverting attention.
Why’s answers never satisfy
And make me angry.
How can I love rules?
How can rules love me?
Will they ever smile at me?
Hold me in a long embrace?
Will rules move me to tears?
To compassion?
To self-forgetfulness?
Can rules help me truly forgive my neighbor?
Will rules stand with me when all else is gone?
And if they do, will it be enough?
How can rules love me?
There is One whom I trust.
There is One who loves me,
Who hears my heart’s cry
And does not walk away, laugh, or accuse.
He authored knowledge.
He composed the tune called wisdom.
Strength and ability are ample paints on His palate.
He offers His hand to me.
“May I have this dance?”
My heart races. My face flushes.
I take His hand and He leads me onto the floor.
I love Him! He is mine and I am His!
How can I but rise when He calls?
