A peasant girl, Esther spent an entire year in the palace of Xerxes undergoing treatments in preparation for her one night with the king. Her skin was exfoliated with spices and her body anointed with fragrances until she literally exuded a sweet aroma as she approached the king’s chamber.
Another famous woman broke her alabaster box and anointed Jesus’ head with a precious fragrance in preparation for his burial. (Matt 26: 7-13) A sinner, she was condemned by her contemporaries. In fact, the religious leaders of her day found her presence odious, an offence to their dignity.
But in His loving kindness our Father sent His Son so that, not in a year but in an instant, I, a sinner, might be forgiven and clothed in His righteousness. Covered by His blood, poured out for me, I now appear before the throne as a sweet smell rising to God. (II Cor. 2:14, 15) Through the gift of grace, I am not only accepted but also adopted--a child of the King.
A queen, an adulteress and me! In adoration, His Spirit within me whispers, “Thank you, Lord, for your perfect plan for all three.”
