Dare one ask the burning question that torments the mind, “An act of God?” Here, left to die, deaths of agony and deaths that came slowly as the cries for help grew feeble. No breath, no strength to cry out for mercy. And mercy has not come. Those alive after the first upheaval, left to slowly absorb the horrors of their circumstances, pinned, trapped and isolated from any living creature to rescue them or provide assistance. And for many death came slowly.
The knowing of their dying, was this their last conscious thought? For the redeemed there is the hope of the glory of heaven. But what of those who have known only the ways of evil. The crucified and risen again Saviour on the cross was an unknown reality for these tragic bodies in a remote village of Pakistan. Cut off, alone, abandoned, the life force squeezed out by tons of debris of an earthquake’s force.
How can it be? What man, woman or innocent child deserved to die like this? The prophesy of the Word, “And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven” (KJV Luke 21:11) did not reach this village to warn the people. Yet, they were lost in sin, paganism and idolatry, lost mostly by remoteness of location and time. Not for them the knowledge of the living God. The time to reach out to the Lord and Saviour in prayer of repentance, belief and hope, passed. Not for them the sweet fragrance of their prayers ascending to the throne of heaven.
We robbed them of victory over death. We who have been set as Watchmen to declare His Word in our own cities, towns, workplaces, neighbourhoods and families, have not obeyed. An earthquake cannot quench the saving grace of our Lord and Saviour. Only we can quench its flow when we do not fulfil that great commission to “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel…” (KJV Mark 16:15). If our sharing the gospel, saves one soul, who knows where that person’s witness may spread, even to the remotest villages of Pakistan.
